Windows XP

I get an error report:

error opening file for writing

" C:\Program Files\VDMSound\LaunchPad.dll"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Ive been messing with this for hours- followed the instuctions very carefully in the "Beginners Guide" , but I admit I feel completely ignorant when I read through all the stuff in your forum- sorry to ask what is probably a dumb question.

yes I can make changes to OS- I am the administrator

Could this be related to the same problem I am having trying to open the scummVM.exe file I downloaded (similar error message that says :

"This application failed to start because SDL.dll was not found"

???

No. You need to reboot your computer (or just force-quit and restart Explorer.exe) to have Windows release that file before running the 2.1.0 installer. That's why the installer tells you to reboot if it finds VDMSound 2.0.4 or earlier installed (and runs the uninstall for that version). And, those two error messages are completely unrelated. 😀

Yes, it’s my fault.

Thank you , I tried rebooting before- and tried two more times- still no luck.... the old version is deleted. Any other ideas??

I dont know if this means anything:
It starts to load and then stops about 80% complete,
(green bar moving...etc..), I get the error message mentioned above, - it never even gets to the "reboot" prompt ( as pictured in the "beginners guide").

Go Start > Run, type "regsvr32 /u %VDMSPath%\LaunchPad.dll" then reboot.

Yes, it’s my fault.

I tried your most recent reccomendation:

Go Start > Run, type "regsvr32 /u %VDMSPath%\LaunchPad.dll" then reboot.

Still no luck, this time a window came up saying:

Cannot find 'regsvr32 /u %VDMSPath%\LaunchPad.dll'

Its starting to look hopless, huh. 😢

D'oh.
Something's killed your PATH environment variable. (The old installer did this...I thought I fixed it.) Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment Variables (button) > OK (button) > OK (button).

Yes, it’s my fault.

Again I tried with no success-

When I reach the Environment Variables- do i need to edit prior to clicking "okay"?
the current settting reads:

VDMSPath C\:Program Files\VDMSound

your patience is greatly appreciated! Thank you for all your help thus far...

I would hope that says C:\Program Files\VDMSound
And the issue isn't your VDMSPath var, it's your PATH var. And it still will show up correctly there, you just need to hit OK OK in order to get the rest of the system to refresh its envvar list.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Are you sure that you are typing the command line *without* the quotes? This error message should only be presented if you typed it in the Start/Run box with the double quotes, because Windows thinks you want to run an executable called "regsvr32 /u ...". Otherwise, if there was a problem with your PATH variable the error message should say something like Cannot find 'regsvr32' (or one of its components)...
