VDMSound Win98 So Close, Yet So Far...

I got vdmsound to install ok for the most part on my system, but I'm still having trouble. When I run the dosdrv file and test midi it works perfectly and I can hear the music fine, but when I try to get sound effects all I get is scratch. Not just scratchy sound, real static scratch, I have the all the ports set up the way the tutorial says but sounds just won't seem to play. I don't see how midi can work perfectly and then sound will hang like that for me. Any help please?

I think we will need more information if you want detailed help. Please let us know what audio hardware you have, what game(s) you are using to test, settings, BLASTER environment variables you're using, etc.

The more info we have the more assistance we can provide.

Oh sorry for the vagueness, I'm using an onboard via chip, Via Ac 97', I was testing vdm on all sorts of games, Daggerfall, Duke3d, Doom, etc. All of them handle midi perfectly, but just will not do sound effects though.
