Hi to all members:

IN Dosbox tutorial you show all Dosbox commands, but the "more" comand which allows me to stop the screen a page at a time is missing. So how do I stop the screen one page at a time without the "more command". If I use "Type command" the text flys by to end of program. I need look at my program in pages while in "Dosbox". Is their work around so can stop the each page while I looking at it? If not can you add the "more command" to Dosbox or command that will do the same thing in your program? Pause command does not work in this case. I would really appreicate it if a member can tell how to do this without the "more command". Thanks for any idea's. 🙁

DOSBox targets DOS games, and games generally don't use MORE, at least not directly. Also, it's not difficult to use MORE.COM from MS-DOS in DOSBox, or the one from FreeDOS if you don't own a license for MS-DOS.

Some games' "manuals" come in .bat files that just simply "type manual.txt |more".

If you have the MORE external program, it works in DOSBox with the redirected input form of "more < manual.txt", but piping isn't supported unless you boot a real DOS. Another option is to use the enhanced TYPE command in the 4DOS shell, where you can do "type manual.txt /P" with the added switch for page pauses.

DosBox is not supporting the | pipe. So - you still don't have the full functionality even with installed more.com.

Thanks for all your suggestions, but most do not work for me. I am using dosbox z:>ver Dosbox version 0.74 reported dos version 5.0. I tryed using dos version 6.1 "more.com" and shows incorrect version of dos in Dosbox window. I am trying to look at one file at time. So the text option does not work either. I trying looking for copy of ms dos version 5.o on ebay none available. Freedos will not work in my application either.
So can any one send me a copy "more.com version 5.o dos application only which is a 4k file." It look's like only More.com version 5.0 will work for me. Thanks. Since I only one small file I don't think I am breaking any forum rules on software? 😀 [/quote]

You can change the version of DOS that DOSBox reports to programs, which should remove MORE's complaint.

VER SET 6 1 (for version 6.01)

VER SET 6 10 (for version 6.10)

you could also google up a whole squad of freeware DOS text editors that double as file browsers, obviating the need for TYPE and MORE.COM. I use an external editor purely to create misc/batch files quickly from within DOSBox (since "copy con: newfile.bat" isn't supported all the way).

Thanks for the help. It did work but this is very strange. The more.com version is pc-dos 3.30 and the other does programs are ms dos 7.00 ? I do appricate the help. Thanks for dos parameters. Did IBM own the more.com at time in early dos? 😮

It was a joint venture between Ms and IBM at the time, so, at that point, whoever sold the system branded it (not too difficult changing two letters...or whole error messages with a hex editor if you found the defaults dull 😁).

As I said before dos more.com worked for version 3.30 and ver set 3 30 worked ok. I ordered some new dos 6.21 from ebay in sealed pack. Since my dos disks got lost when I moved , I ordered new set dos 6.21 plus tools for $20. Anyway when I added more.com ver 6.21 it said wrong dos version in Dosbox. I set my ver set to 6 21 which did not work. Did I do some thing wrong with my version ver set? How many versions of MS-Dos in version 6 are their? 😮

try 6 2
I think that 6.21 still identified itself as 6.2

Thanks for your help Peterferrie. In case anyone else has this problem , this how I fixed it. I went to en.wikipedia.org and found out how many versions of 6 dos existed. Their are only 5.

V6.0
V6.1
v6.2
v6.21
v6.22

I did what you said "ver set 6 2 (version 6.21) which did not work. Since I now knew all versions of ms-dos. I started trying different ver set's. My dos-version 6.22 is really at least "more.com" version 6.20 ver set 6 20 which worked perfectly. Another thing I should mention I used free binary file opener. Which only said ms-dos version 6 only. I though it would give me exact MS-Dos version which did not show up. Any member know why? 😁

I'm not sure what you mean here. What is this binary file opener, what is it supposed to do, and in what way did it say "version 6 only" ?

Could you elaborate on this point a little more?

By the way, if I read Wikipedia correctly, there was only a PC-DOS 6.1, not an MS-DOS 6.1.

Hi Jorpho:

I will answer some of your questions.
I gave 5 dos's that were in that time period for Pc-dos ms-dos I did not quote which were which. I did not make mistake because I did not care what dos it was only that knew what version it was for version 6 group. For the main question you ask. A binary opener allows you look inside .exe or com files and change the way they work or just view which is what I do because if you do not know what you are doing you will destroy the file. Another words the file is worthless after that. Here's example: Just google "flexhex" it will explain everything to you. Next question you said freedos did not work in certain cases. So here's my suggestion: Goto Ebay and goto advance on it. Type in box 390227637219. This takes you to ebay seller that sells "new unused full dos ms-dos 6.21 Plus tools. buy now $19.95 plus ship. I tryed the dos and it comes completely sealed. He sold 102 packs without any negative comments. At least you have legal copy of dos that will not put virus on your computer. At this time the seller has 10 packs available. I had dos 5.0 and 6.21 and was lost when I moved. Dosbox will take any dos you give it and work but some interface with pc. I am very happy with Dosbox as I can use 16bit programs on 64bit system.

I was not sure what you meant because I usually see those referred to as "hex editors" rather than "binary file openers". So in what way does it tell you "ms-dos version 6 only" ? This information may help someone to answer your question as to why it would not give you "an exact MS-Dos version".

Next question you said freedos did not work in certain cases.

No, I was quoting what you said. To be specific, my question is, why would the FreeDOS version of "more" not work with your application?

so why does it tell you ms-dos 6 only

Well the answer is ms or pc dos did not put it their! When I opened dos version 3.30 it told me it was version 3.30. In version 6.21 it showed version 6 only? I did not want use "freedos" as said I needed to replace my missing dos disks. If you look at my profile it said's hobbies "electronics". So I am not gamer but like how games are designed. My main hobby is microcontroller design and experimenating with hardware chips and taking anything electronic apart to see how it works. When everyone was using windows back in the 90's. I still had dos computer and commendor 64 pc. I never liked windows. Here's something that is interesting back in 60's or 70's space flights backup system was commendor 64 if communation was lost with the Cape. I should mention I am not great programmer but I like using assembler language.BTW Hex editors and binary openers are the same. It's just play on words for companies selling their products.
