YAMAHA 724 XG PCI

"Legacy support includes an OPL3 FM synthesizer, Sound Blaster Pro (22 kHz 8-bit Stereo) emulation and MPU-401 compatible MIDI interface. In addition to OPL3, DOS applications running under Windows 9x/Me can also use the XG tone generator."

So, it has that SB_Link connector, OPL3 and XG playback. This seems like it could be the perfect non-ISA sound card.

that's partially correct. the ymf724/744/754 do have real opl3 integrated, which is accessable with dos driver, or you can use xg synth in win98 dos window by choosing "general midi" in certain games.
the downside is(to my opinion), the card above from addonics is not considered one of the well-made ymf724 cards to my standard. well-made ymf724 cards include yamaha wf192, xwave/labway, aopen, hoontech and etc, they have better sound quality but unfortunately seem to lack that sb-link connector, and may or may not work under dos depending on your mainboard.

i have several good ymf724/744/754 cards, as stated from yamaha/xwave/aopen/hoontech, but have trouble getting them to be detected by dos driver, and neither the cards nor my 815 mainboard have the sb-link connector.🙁
i could only remember getting one ymf724 to run in dos more than 10 years ago, probably on a bx or 693 mainboard. i do have a bx in storage now, but don't have enough psu and harddisks to set it up, maybe i'll give it a try later.

I wholeheartedly agree. I was just looking at some of the other items from an eBay seller I recently dealt with, and noticed that there, thought I'd pop it up here and see what the verdict was.

(The item I bought from him was my AWE64 Gold 😉)

Besides the als400 which seems to have pretty decent soundblaster compatibility without sblink or whatever I've never seen any other pci card with very decent dos support.
