I'd like to explore upgrading my GUS Classic to 1 MB. This is unrelated to my SC2 issue - in addition to gaming, I'll be using the card for music playback and maybe even composition; I've found that the standard 256k can fill up pretty easily.

A million years ago, I ran across an official Gravis list of approved brands/part numbers for additional RAM for the GUS Classic. I remember TI and NEC were among the brands listed. Would anyone happen to have this list? I assume it's been updated since then. And I know that any 80-ns 128k DRAM should work.

It's not the list I remember, but I found some help in one of the old GUS Daily Digests:

http://www.gravisultrasound.com/files/UDD/vol … /1994-01-26.TXT

This is a list of vendors that make JEDEC standard 256Kx4 Fast Pagemode DRAMs. I am not saying that all of these will work in the GUS because the timing and power consumption of every vendors design is slightly different. Nor have I personally tested each of these vendors in the GUS ... This is only a cross reference list that I put together with a little research into various DRAM data books and the IC Master 1993 master selection guide. For simplicity, I am leaving the speed grade designation off (a -10, -8, -7, or -6 extension at the end of the part number).

Manufacturer Part Numbers of 256Kx4 Fast Pagemode DRAMs

There's a discussion here Someone need an upgrade for Gravis ultrasound?

but basically any DIP 4256 chips should work if they are 70ns or faster

Huh, dunno how I missed that. Looks like the last online store mentioned in that thread has the Samsung chip, for a non-crazy price. Thanks!
