I'm putting the finishing touches to an old laptop that I bought my sister when she went to university and has since sat in a wardrobe for years - it's an IBM Thinkpad 385ED (P166MMX) - I've now upgraded it to 80Mb of ram (16mb soldered + 64mb module), a brand new 60gb hdd (Ontrack 9.57 to gain access to the full capacity) and a 10/100 pcmcia card for mass data transfer (using a dos packet drivers and the excellent mtcp suite).

This thing is built like a tank and about 3 inches thick with the lid closed.

I've found that the built-in audio is a CS4236 and is Soundblaster Pro compatible via the 'drivers' available from IBM/Lenovo (it doesn't need a loadable driver or a tsr, thankfully).... however, being primarily a business class machine it only has one (surprisingly loud!) speaker. So i'm trying to find either clip-on speakers or a soundbar for the screen... these all seem to be usb-powered though.

Has anyone seen anything on their travels that could be useful for this type of thing? I'd prefer something powered from maybe a handful of AA's or a 9v battery if possible, rather than mains.

That's the first thing (and I can live with it in mono for the time being), the second is more problematic... this machine uses the typical IBM trackpoint; aka 'the red nipple of doom'. The pointer still works well in the BIOS, but I can't get cutemouse to pick it up - it just locks the machine when I try to run it. I would have thought it was interfaced using PS/2 protocol and cutemouse would have 'just worked', but it seems not.

Anyone else have a Thinkpad of this (or similar) vintage - what are you using for DOS mouse drivers? Although IBM/Lenovo have DOS drivers for *every* other piece of the hardware (including infrared! and pcmcia!) there are none listed for the trackpoint.

The problem with direct speaker sets is that they are really smegging quiet for most sound cards, with a few exceptions, notably SB16 and ensoniq audioPCI which both have jumpers onboard for line out / speaker out mode. That is why those speaker bars have little USB plugs, for a built in amplifier.

I myself have bought a couple of mini mylar cone speakers about 1 inch in diameter and soldered them directly to a 1/8" stereo plug, and then used a piece of a bic pen and some hotglue to make a little speaker set to test sound cards with. You could do that if you have some skill, but the best bet would prolly be to find a portable speaker set with batteries built in, for things like older MP3 players (NOT Ipod or such, they have special jacks they use to power them with usually, and are form fitting)

DOS mouse drivers? Lemme upload the ones I use for all my DOS PCs...
http://foxtecha.com/files/DOS/ you'll find mouse.com there.

While browsing I just found this:
http://wwwcssrv.almaden.ibm.com/trackpoint/fi … es/dostest.html

The 'mouse.com' utility included in that bundle does appear to detect the trackpoint interface, so that's one problem down!
