Maybe some guy sli'd two 8mb voodoo2s and decided to keep it simple by saying 'voodoo2 16mb', or maybe even TYPOED 'Voodoo3'

16mb Voodoos start from Banshee and up.

I don't know what Quantum has but it seems most likely they'd have some really pimped voodoo2 lines.

I suppose it is possible. Most voodoo 1's were 4mb. There are some relativly rare 6mb versions. (I have one) As for the Voodoo2, they had the 8mb and the 12mb. As for 16mb, I'm willing to bet it is a typo. 12mb doesnt stick in the brain as well as 16mb. However in my searches it seems to be that people confuse the voodoo banshee with the other cards. Mostly because the banshee came with 16mb of ram was was based off the voodoo 2.

ALSO, if you have 2x 12mb voodoo cards, they will only report 16mb of video memory, TOTAL. The rest of the memory was used for the frame buffer.

Yes I knew about the effective memory in sli mode but I am searching around about a single card. I think that it might be possible that there might be a 16mb version that has 4 more mb for the frame buffer for a total of 8mb vs the standard 4mb. If it is not possible then oh well :L To much day dreaming 🤣. 😢

The only stupid questions are the ones not asked. For the most part anyway. From what i've been told, 12mb is a physical limitation to the chipset. Which doesnt make a lot of sense when the banshee is 1/2 a voodoo2 and has 16mb...

Yea, I wish that 3dfx had done a little more though considering how memory limited things were.

You have to remember, memory was still pretty expensive then. I remember paying $250 for FOUR mb of ram in 94'. And that much again in 98 for a 32mb stick. Its not like today where DDR3 is PRACTICALLY FREE.

There was a Quantum 3D with that ammount of memory, but it was actually a Voodoo Graphics with built-in SLI.

So after reading over it did support up to 16mb but just not as I had assumed. Oh well it was an interesting thought to start off with. I did find out that it is or might be possible to mod the 8mb editions to 12mb without needing to deal with firmware unlike modern cards using the vram off a dead v2.

That just KILLED my slot a rig. Now I have to find a board with 66mhz pci slots. /RAGE

it also looks like you can have a 4mb frame buffer AND 16mb of texture ram, totaling 20mb per card. Interesting...

Dual socket Opteron and Xeons boards almost always have 66mhz pic slots. Looks like I might make use of my rdram socket 603 server after all 😮

voodoo2/3/5 work with 32-bit 33mhz/66mhz pci slots. the problem is finding a motherboard with one of these. it's either a p3 server or mac g3 era m/b. i also don't think 66mhz is needed for v2 or v3, they shouldnt saturate the bandwidth. v5 does on higher resolutions

ps: 64bit 66mhz (pci-x) isn't different from 32bit 66mhz (pci)?

Looks like I wasn't alone in my thinking and some people mentioned in comments that there were some voodoo2 made after the voodoo3 had hit the market by 3dfx them selves with 16mb. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lFa-_0U3CA

EDIT: after some more searching looks like there was more confusion as one had already said amongst owners out there however there are some that suggested that there might have been a very limited run of units with a third tmu instead of only two. As for the rest it could have been this Quantum3D Obsidian2 X-16 😒

It has to be the Quantum3D X-16 they are thinking of. I have the X-24 and the SB200i and they have more memory but they are also 2 Voodoos in single slot SLi. The X-24 is like the original GeForce 7900/7950 GX2 with the two Voodoos sandwiched together on separate boards. The SB200i is like the single slot SLi cards that came later where everything is mounted on a single circuit board. That is probably the cause of confusion.

Even though those cards came with more memory, the memory isn't pooled so you can't say they are 16mb or 24mb cards because each of the Voodoos only has access to it's own 8 or 12mb of memory just like with a modern day dual GPU card that might have 4gb of RAM onboard, it's not a 4gb card, it's still only a 2gb card because each GPU still only has 2GB of RAM to work with.

Yea, the frame buffer scales but texture is mirrored in sli when it comes to voodoo2. As for the 7900GTX Duo I own two of those and one has the reference coolers 😁
