Im giving up on the tualatin project for the moment as the motherboard seems to be faulty, that machine might become a Pentium 4 845 isa system if I get that impulsive feeling again.

However, I am very pleased with this system.

Dual pentium pro motherboard, ATX! This came with a very handy and maxed out 512meg of ram
Overdrive333.jpg
Pentium 2 overdrive 333mhz, the very last overdrive intel produced, nice performance increase over the Pentium pro 200 with 512 full speed cache & mmx.
BFG.jpg
BFG 6200 OC PCI 256meg, this card is the fasted thing in PCI format if you want to run windows 98, it also has DVI for crystal clear images on a modern LCD, a quick slew of benchmarks in dos showed no funny imperfections.
Awe32.jpg
Soundblaster 32 PNP ISA CT3670(AWE32), This is no AWE64 Gold but close enough, it has a 4.16 dsp which should provide trouble free mpu-401 emulation, FM/OPL music is still very good with excellent sounblaster compatibility.
benchmark.jpg

I ran some benchmarks before I swapped the Pentium pro 200 for the overdrive 333.

I was expecting a bigger increase in Quake 2/3 scores with the cpu upgrade, I knew the CPU would bottleneck the graphics card but I was suprised at how well the old 200 scored.
Fast vid shows a great increase in dos based programmes, definately worthwhile for both pentium pro and pentium 2 machines.

I'll update the thread soon with more pictures, these are the specs, obviously the idea was to make a machine as powerful as it can be.

Oh man, I want one of those babies, but motherboards are hard to find and very expensive (especially for dual cpu setups!).
Awesome man 😁

The Overdrive 333 is basically a Pentium II Xeon in Socket 8 form. I always wanted one, but I have seen only offers with the heatsink removed, which is non-standard and would require some work to recreate.

Wow very nice. I just built my own Dual Pentium Pro system last week! (just a couple of threads down called Dual Pentium Pro Computer).

I would love to get some Overdrive chips but they are very expensive still!

Only a single CPU at this stage?

after about 300mhz the 66mhz fsb really starts to be the limiting factor. especially when you have 2 processors.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

That is an awefully attractive system you have. Does it have a nice matching beige/white case to go with it? Photos please.

How's your luck sourcing a second PII 333 overdrive?

Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.

I could buy another PII overdrive chip right now If I wanted but it would serve no purpose, im only running windows 98se and dos, perhaps it would be a good experiment to have a 2nd cpu and run windows XP?

Ive let another forum know where I bought the cpu, I only found it by logging onto www.ebay.com and not my native ebay.com.au site, the pentium overdrive search did'nt bring up the listing unless I logged on to the american ebay, anyway.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pentium-II-Overdrive- … b#ht_500wt_1287

This guy seems to have a stockpile so who knows how many hes got, he does'nt list international postage but I emailed him and he gave a genuine postage cost and the deal was a no brainer.

Shame about the lack of pentium pro motherboards as I bet they're tossed without a 2nd thought when the cpus are sold for scrap.

Initially I thought my motherboard had settings to overclock but it was only the multiplier settings, outta luck in that repsect.

The case would be an early-mid 2000's model which is whitish, the power button is circular, silver, blingy looking thing which is uliminated blue when powered on.. apart from that its a nice looking case, I have thought about tracking down a big old heavy, rectangular tank but im not that into cases with my systems.

When is someone going to build a dual Xeon using some of those top grade Xeon CPUs with 2MB L2? 😕 😕

I don't think I've ever seen someone on here go that route.

I have an asus xg-dls with 2x 900/2m processors... but Its currently running as my home router... i'll take some pictures soon when I de commission it. I have a new router on the way from newegg. I'm "finally" getting N wifi.

Ah, y'all are thinking small-time. For the proper PIII Xeon experience, somebody needs to throw a good PCI video card (or ten) into a first-gen Proliant DL760. One Xeon is OK, two is better... so why not go all the way and use goddamn eight of 'em? 🤣

Nice work and you are very lucky to have a complete build these days.

Has anyone seen a socket 8 to 370 adapter? Haven't seen one in many years but allowed socket 8 boards to use socket 370 66mhz fsb celerons. http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2004/12/20/the … pentium_pro.jpg

I've heard of 'em before, there were a few different variants of them made but AFAIK they weren't that widely available outside Asia. But the primary problem with 'em is, they weren't particularly useful... since Socket 8 boards generally wouldn't know what the hell to do with a Celeron if you installed one. Even the Powerleap adapter, which was the most advanced of the lot, had problems getting the Celeron's L2 cache to work on a lot of boards.

Honestly, the boards are cheaper than the PPro's and Pentium II Overdrives. You're far more likely to get a good deal on the motherboard than on the CPU's. You would save a lot of money, time and have a better system just building a dual slot 1 or dual socket 370 system instead of waiting for cheap PPro or PII OD chips to turn up. I'd pass on a dual PIII Xeon, too.

I wonder whether they still have that product in stock and haven't just forgotten to delete the listing. It's hard to imagine that there's any of those still hanging around in a warehouse someplace.

If you're referring to the slot 2/PIII based Xeon then money is the reason. Those parts aren't cheap relative to other dual CPU systems that you can build. Pentium 4 based Xeon parts are common as dirt, though. I got a Tyan motherboard with dual P4 Xeons for $15 already. There's more than $15 worth of aluminum in the heatsinks that came with the CPU's so I got real lucky not to get outbid on that one.

I also have a dual p4 xeon setup. Its currently running as my home server. it does file hosting, backups, webserving, and runs a minecraft server. It has 2x 3.8ghz xeons in this mobo: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboar … 25/X6DA8-G2.cfm

True, but if he is really interested I guess it doesnt hurt to send an email to ask 😉 Also there are possibilities they still have stuff left that they bought from some OEM inventory. A recent example that comes to me is the seller on Ebay who sells brand new A3D Vortex 2 cards still sealed in retail package.

The last photo could be called "Pentium Overdrive and my other toys" 😁

You've got kid(s), that's cooler than an Overdrive beast. I'm kinda happy for everyone who has kids. And if that bikes and socks (?) belong to your sister or some other relative, nevermind.
