While it is pretty common for older titles too run too fast under dosbox, I haven't seen an issue like this before. I have lowered the cycles as low as 25, and it still flys through the intro. At 75 cycles the game is basically unplayable. There has to be something going on here, because other games from 82/83 don't run this fast on those cycles. Typically 300 cycles is low enough for any game of that time.

I've tried changing the machine type to pcjr, cga, and such, and I also tried changing machine type to 386_slow, which appeared to be the slowest possible setting.

Some BASIC games set the system clock to 00:00:00 as a lazy way to keep track of elapsed time, which official releases of DOSBox do not support. There is a patch in SVN to accommodate that specific use of the system clock, so be sure to try a vanilla SVN build. If a message appears in the status window about the system clock being messed with, you'll know you have one of the "lazy" BASIC games.
