Awesome game, but I've been having some problems with it lately. Well, one: sometimes my plane seems to crash into an invisible hill. The game just stops, the crash sound plays and then I see the death screen, telling me I crashed into a hill. It's happened three times so far, ruining missions and really putting a dent into my enjoyment of an otherwise fantastic, unique game.

There's no hill. I can see hills and mountains around the map, but none anywhere near close for me to actually crash into. In all three cases I had been flying level, at a decent speed and altitude (once I was even 600ft above the ground!).

I'm using DOSBox 0.74, and this has happened at both 10000 and 7000 cycles. Copy protection always answered right (well, I quit whenever I fail: could the game be sabotaging itself for the future?). No joystick, AdLib sound. CPU core and type both on auto setting. I haven't really tweaked the default configuration much, and have no idea what might be causing this bizarre bug. Nobody else seems to be experiencing it, as far as my googling could see.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: This is not the version with take-off speech (which hangs if using Ad Lib). I'm playing .02, not .03. I don't know if the latter has this bug, but I consider it an inferior version anyway since Ad Lib is not an option, and some markers are missing on the non-tac map.

I suggest you do try the v3 and/or v4 patch (available on Patches Scrolls), because the kind of problem you describe is much more likely a game bug than a DOSBox issue.

As for issues with the game's speech when selecting AdLib sound, you can use 0.73 or an SVN build to avoid DMA wrapping exit errors that can occur in 0.74. If you want to stick with 0.74 you can use settings of sbtype=none oplmode=opl2, but the digitized speech through OPL will probably be difficult to hear.

I'll give that a shot. v3 fixes a bunch of bugs, and v4 additionally tweaks VGAME.EXE, which is the actual flight simulator program. If I'm lucky, the bug should be fixed.

I'm sticking with 0.74, and the trick you suggested seems to prevent the DMA error from happening. The speech is unintelligible and barely audible, but I'm fine with that.

I'll post an update on the situation after I've flown a few missions. Wouldn't be a confirmation that the glitch is gone, but a good indication nonetheless.

Thanks! 😉

Alright, after some more playing, I can say the bug appears to be gone. I'll post again if I ever run into it on v4.
