After mounting a directory in dos box their is no support for accessing other directories, for eg: run xtgold in dosbox & you can not change to other directories, therefore DOSBOX is only suited to running programs which use a single directory.

That's not true. You just have to mount intelligently. If all your dos apps and games are installed to c:/dos and you mont c:/dos as c you have access to ALL the folders in there.
If you need further access to folders outside of c:/dos mount them as different drives.

There is an issue with XTree Gold in DOSBox 0.74 where it doesn't find subdirectories. The issue has been resolved in current source, so you can use an SVN build; or for 0.74 you can use the patch program here.
