May I know what is the problem with a low humming and irritating noise which follows a pc speaker's sound/beep?

It only exists on certain setups. Currently it is produced in my laptop running Windows 7 x64 and my desktop pc running Windows XP x86.

Thing is, I don't remember it being there previously.

I have attached a sample of this humming noise below. It is apparent right after I bypassed the intro in King's Quest II.

This noise is not there when sound blaster or midi sounds are playing.

What is the reason for this? Is it avoidable?

Thanks for any help.

It's probably the speaker shutdown feature. You should check if it's audible with dosbox-daum since it has some PC speaker improvements.

Are you sure it can be heard on this video?

I for one can't hear it.

(what I do find curious in your video is why the 8x8 text font in the title screen is different from the 'normal' 8x8 font that appears in the game status bar - I doubt many people notice these things but I don't think I've seen this font in any version of DOSBox myself...)

I don't hear anything, but less subjectively: a demuxed wave shows the samples gradually ramping to zero, and perhaps on some sound hardware and/or drivers this produces an audible artifact.

The title screen appears to be subject to code page changes, but not the in-game screens. Dunno what code page was being used to make the video, but you can get a similar result with the Spanish code page (i.e. keyb sp).

Ok, I have attached the recorded sound files using my phone. Hope you can hear it.

Maybe it has got to do with the drivers and/or software interference, but anyway here they are.

There are two files in the bigger kq2_noize.zip. It contains the wav file which is a converted file from the original m4a format from my phone. I have converted and included the wav file, for compatibility with players sake.

The original m4a format is in the Voice 001.zip file. This is a much smaller file, so if you can play it in this format (most players nowadays can, I guess) you can just download this.

Thanks for any enlightenment.

Note : The noise gradually dampens from high to low and disappears. The sound is like that heard in oldern day TV channels with the circle and coloured patterns before they start broadcasting, if you get what I mean.)

(As for the font thing, I'm not sure. This video was captured within Dosbox. I'm using D-Fend Reloaded 1.2.1 to boot the game. Settings :

Full Screen Resolution : Original
Keep Correct Aspect Ratio
Render : Overlay
Scale : normal2x

System : ASUS G73jh-A1 Laptop @ 1920x1080
Graphics Driver : AMD Catalyst 11.6.)
