SDL or the devel package for SDL?

LibSDL needs to be installed from source if you want to use it from the command line in OS X, at least that's my experience. The package provided by libsdl.org is meant for being used with the Apple IDE.

The SDL developer package for MacOS X only contains the files for Project Builder, not for command line compilation.

You'll have to compile that from the source distribution of SDL.
Keep in mind that superuser rights are needed to create some of the directories and files, so "sudo" should be added in front of the last command mentioned in the readme (I'm currently not sure if it was "sudo make" or "sudo make install").

I think you might have to log out and log back in for the SDL files to be found, but then translation of DOSbox should simply work via "./configure" and "make".

😵 Hey! I installed sdl using fink and was able to compile dosbox. It runs under panther . . . but when I try to launch intvdos.exe (a dos intellivision emulator) dosbox can't handle it. I get a bunch of cracks, pops, and a black screen.

Any advice?

To emulate Intellivision under MacOS, use Intellivision Lives!, jzIntvMac or MESS.

Emulator within an emulator - what makes you think that is a concentration of DOSBox developers, eh? Sheesh...
