Hello,

I'm new at this forum and I hope somebody could help me. 😀

I'm a Mac user and after extracting the KQ Collection .exe data with WineBottler I can't launch KQ1 and KQ2 in DOSBox?!
A lot other games like SQ1, KQ1, etc. are running and I can launch the .exe files like sc1.exe... But the KQ2 and KQ3 what.exe file don't launch the game. I should enter a key...

Please help and thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Simon

Just get the GOG.com version. It does it all for you 😀

Also, please post under DOSBox games section, as this section is for help in getting DOS games running on a MS-DOS PC.

I think the exe should be SCIV.EXE for those games. Or simply SIERRA.EXE. Can't remember right now. WHAT.EXE is a file used by the compilation's installer program to get user input, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm sure you know already, you can run some of these games with ScummVM.
This prevents you from fiddling around to get a game started.

I like "fiddling around" 😁 btw. all games are running in ScummVM!

Now I've copied from the KQ1 folder the sciv.exe and from the kq4 folder the sierra.exe file. Starting KQ2 and KQ3 is now possible with sierra.exe and playing with the keyboard in 16-color modus and 1-voice sound is possible... In ScummVM is the mouse active?!

If I try to launch KQ2/3 with sciv.exe it says "Can't load resource map!" I copy now from another folder this file and launch again KQ3... Now can't find configuration file "Resource.cfg". Now I copy from KQ1 this file... "Couldn't install video driver"...

I've found MCGA320.drv, EGA320.drv etc. in the other KQ folder!

Any ideas?

SCIV.EXE does not work with KQ2 or KQ3. Different engine. Stick with SIERRA.COM. It should be rougly 4K in size. Do not use a SIERRA.COM file that is less than 1K, all that does is call SCIV.EXE.

It sounds like you have the files all jumbled up. Be sure that you extract to individual folders. As Great Hierophant notes, the EXE for the AGI games is generally SIERRA.COM. SCI0, SCIV.EXE. SCI1 SIERRA.EXE. WHAT.EXE is just a helper app for the install.

Thanks for your help!

This is the Classic Collection by VUGAMES which is still available for only 6-7 EUR...

Extracting .exe files on a Mac is not so easy. I've find out a way with WineBottler and I've tried a 2nd time extracting the files for KQ2 and KQ3.
But finally I find only the "What.exe" files in the KQ2 and KQ3 folders and have to add/copy the sierra.exe files?! It works!

KQ1 with mouse support is a VGA version. I think this version was developed after KQ2 and KQ3?!

But thank you very much. I can play the games in ScummVM(with mouse support) and DOSBox. Mac OS 7.5.5 - 9 versions also run in SheepShaver! 😀

Cheers

Yes.

Hm, early KQ/SQ versions runs best on Mini vMac supporting its b/w screen only. It seems, KQ3 may support 16 colours as well. When I fed ScummVM with these early Mac versions, I was surprised to see the games in colour.

The 2006 VU collection includes the KQ1 SCI remake, which is EGA, not VGA. The files are not packed in the EXE, but in an InstallShield cab file. This collection has quite a few problems. The game files used seem to be from several different sources and are incomplete. It is misconfigured and uses an ancient version of DOSBox.

I have a new installer that addresses all of these issues, but it is for Windows. If it does not work via something like WINE, you could try installing it on a PC and then copy the folders to your Mac. You would still need to manually set the games up in a Mac build of DOSBox.
