Hiya!

I vaguely seem to remember theres was thread here on how to create -5v on a modern psu... I can't seem to find it anymore 😢 , probably the info is inside another semi-relevant thread... does anyone here has the info to share?
Reason asking is because I bought a new Chieftec 450W PSU for my p1 build and it lacks -5v... opened it to see if it's there but unconnected but there is no sign of a -5v signal anywhere visible. I'd still like to have the option to install my LAPC-I on it though... currently using a mpu401at but you never know what the future brings 🤣
TIA! 😊

edit: found this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-SMALL-PCB-FOR-C … =item3a813acbb6 , any thoughts on that? shipping is a killer though 😵 , maybe it's easy to create one from scratch?

They don't say what technique is used in that ebay converter +12V -> -5V. But if it is an oscillator it usually results in a high pitch noise in audio equipment using it. Converting -12V -> -5V is more safe in that regard.

Or from +5V, google 'voltage inverter', see if there is one without oscillator/timer. I made one with a NE555 timer before, it was unusable for audio because of the noise in the line, regardless of the capacitors used.

The PSU itself can make -5V and -12V from Alternating current.

If you intend to use it for a sound card: Voltage inverters can produce noise, the LM7905 much less if it gets its stabilization capacitors.

that's the case, I want the -5v line for the LAPC-I ... I still haven't found a solution/schematic on how to create -5v from (preferably) +12v for example...

The MAX232 is a charge pump which also means noise.
