I have a CMI8738 currently plugged into my windows 98 machine but I also have an ESS Solo-1. The question is, is it better than the CMI-based card or not?

Will it work with DOS games on win98? Does it have OPL3 and all the stuff you'd need to play DOS games properly?

Don't think any ESS has a real OPL. I hear ESSFM isn't too bad though. What about a PCI Yamaha card?

ESFM is pretty good and often extremely similar to OPL3. I'd just try it and see if you like it. Solo 1 had a lot of focus on DOS legacy support and that's why it has FM hardware.

I have some OPL3 (SBPro2) and ESFM (ES1869) recordings.

It should be good enough, then. Thanks.
