When I try to start dosbox directly from a Linux command line (not in an xterm window), I get this error: "Can't init SDL Unable to open mouse". Is there a way to disable the mouse detection?

nah not really, SDL also runs with svgalib, but dosbox does like a mouse 😀

So is it possible to run dosbox without X then? If so, how?

Well dosbox runs on whatever SDL provides, so if you can get SDL runnin on something besides X, then dosbox should run there too
