Working on my next video and ran into issues with Pinball Mania (Part of Pinball Fantasies Deluxe which is part of the Pinball Pack from GOG.com) on my Pentium machine.

Everything works fine on the 386DX, but on the Pentium Mania quits after changing tables with a message failing to initialise the Sound Card. It does mention conventional memory, but I tried EMS, XMS and no memory manager and got the same message.

Disabled L1 cache and still the same issue. I believe it's a speed issue so I'm wondering if anyone else has ran into the same issues 😀

Arg you won't believe this.

Removed the SATA controller and hooked up the CF adapter and the bloody game works.

It's moments like this that make you want to arm a nuclear device in your man cave and end it all 😵

The CONFIG.SYS is a little bit different though, so I'll do some more investigating. But once again, what should have been a fun "let's make a video" session turns into a fight with retro hardware 🤣

It was something I forgot to put in the CONFIG.SYS on that new SATA HDD 😒

FILES=20 and BUFFERS=20

One of them is needed

😢 😠 😒 😵

I want my wasted time back please...

Yea 😀

Well the video is edited and currently rendering 😀

Just got the last Pinball release to cover: Pinball Illusions and then I can move on to a totally different game 😵

This issue cost me quite some time and nerves. Could have easily done another video today. But I also learnt something 😀

PS:

Do you have any experience with DR DOS? There was a free version released at some point.

And I have a technet subscription but MS is putting and end to technet. Downloaded the DOS 6.0, 6.22 and Windows 3.1 and 3.11 files before I don't get a chance. The 6.22 are updates files but all they look for is a drive that has been SYSed with an earlier version 😀

nope no idea about DR DOS, never used it... I am a huge fan of PC-DOS though, mainly because of my IBM 386 and emotional attachment but I abandoned it for the FAT32-aware win98-DOS ...

btw, what GOG have for the Pinball Fantasies Deluxe game? An ISO to mount or something else?

BIN / CUE with compressed audio files for CDDA.

Steps are in short:

- Convert compressed audio files to CD compatible WAV files
- Rename .BIN file to .ISO file and mount in DAEMON tools
- Using the mounted files and the WAV files burn a mixed mode CD with Infrarecorder

😀

Dreams Deluxe and Fantasies Deluxe give you a full Installation CD. I think Illusions needs some files copied into a folder and doesn't give you an Installation CD but I will know more tomorrow when I shoot the next video.
