Playing around on my 386 DX33 and I've installed DOS 7.1 (since I'm using an 8GB SCSI drive and need FAT32 to use it as one single drive).

I want to install Microsoft Network Client 3.0, and so far I've setup my NDIS driver (Etherlink III) and I get an IP from my DHCP server. If that is what I wanted it wouldn't be a problem. I want to share my whole C: on the WORKGROUP network so it can be accessed from my Windows 7 computer. I've downloaded WG1049 and NETSHAR.EXE which enables directory shares in the MS Network Client. I run NET SERVER START, but then I get an 2114 Error (Server cannot be started). It complains that share.exe is not started.

I Google around and find out that share.exe is not included in DOS 7.1, so I get the file from MS-DOS 6.22, When running it, it crashes my computer. I've also tried the SHARE.EXE that is modified to run with DOS 7.1 and it loads just fine. It gets rid of the "Share.exe not started" error, but not the 2114 Error. I've also tried the "fakeshare" which fakes the loading of share.exe, but that does not work. I've also tried a trick with using SETVER 6.22 on share.exe, but that have no effect.

Is it possible to have network shares and DOS 7.1 (FAT32) at the same time?

I know about mTCP, but I want to avoid having to use FTP

Found this when I was playing around with Dos7 and Windows for Workgroups

In the end I decided against my "2 windows together" system for a real 6.22/WFW setup so not sure if any of the above really works.
Personally I prefer using Windows rather then DOS for networking, if nothing else gives me an excuse to load/run Windows 3.x

Remember, it's not just FTP. 😀 IRC, Telnet, etc. are there too ...

(And the HTTP server is coming soon.)
