So I'm in the process of setting up my first 386 DX33. This is new territory for me gamewise as I have little experience with this timeperiod.

So far I've come up with:
- Wing Commander (can Wing Commander II be run at sufficient speed?)
- Secret of Monkey Island
- Monkey Island II
- Space Quest 3
- Stunts
- Test Drive II (is it too fast on a 386 DX33?)
- Leasure Suit Larry VGA
- A10 Tank Killer
- Wolfenstein 3D
- Simcity
- Loom
- The Lost Vikings (if it runs OK?)
- Commander Keen
- Lemmings

I've probably missed out on alot. I know there are way more Sierra games, but I'm not sure King's Quest will appeal or not.

Desert Strike
Cannon Fodder
Gobliins series

All these games run well on a 386? I have quicker machines as well, so want to limit to ~1992. Jazz Jack Rabbit, ROTT (Epic/Apogee), DOOM for instance I would rather play on my Socket 4 Pentium 66 (which is my next step up).

Stunts/4D Sports Driving will run on a 386, but with full detail settings it's much more fun on a faster system.
Test Drive II runs well on pretty much anything, Test Drive III is the one with speed troubles. 😉

Jazz runs fine, ROTT not so fine as expected, it's part of the 5% ... all the rest I listed are fine as well

I tested ROTT just for fun and I got a "Get a 486" message when I selected the smallest screensize 🤣

I'll test a bit myself. These are good suggestions though 😀

What I'm really hunting though are pre 1992 games with good gameplay that has aged well.

^ comanche needs a Pentium, or at least a fast 486.

Welcome to 386 territory vetz 😀

Lots of good games you can play. Look at the release year, that's usually a good indicator. One game can work fine, like Wing Commander 2, but the next one will be unplayable, like Wing Commander 3.

I usually find most 3D games to slow on a 386. Like Doom, yes it runs, and with low details and tiny screen it's playable, but it's not for me.

I like my 386 for all the old Adventure games.

A crapload of flight simulators will work if you don't mind your cutoff point being Strike Commander. X-Wing and Falcon 3.0 included.

Star Trek 25th Anniversary will also work fine. Looking back, it's pretty impressive they pulled off bilinear filtering on sprites back in '92...

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've got plenty to check out here 😀

Went through some old disks and I've tested:

- Lotus III - Kick ass music from my Roland and good gameplay (Out Run clone?). Ran very well. Definitely a keeper.
- WIng Commander - Ran too fast on my DX33 (Much quicker than Mau1wurf1977's videos!). Turning off turbo slowed it too much. Had to turn off cache in BIOS settings..... Disappointing!
- Test Drive III - Ran too fast. Too slow with Turbo button. When I turned off external cache it was fine though.
- Stunts. Very good framerate with everything turned to max.

My experience with 386s are around the 16mhz mark, WC1/2 and TD3 ran okay on that.

Really? Back in the days a friend of mine had it on a 386DX-33 and it got very choppy sometimes. But it may have been because of the very convoluted tracks we built. 🤣

In my opinion and from what i can see with my 386's, a good 386DX-40 will provide already more than enough fluid experience for Stunts. I remember when i was a kid i could see quite a difference between my friend DX-33 vs my DX-40. And i was proud of my machine!

I just tried some of the default tracks. They ran fine. Not that convoluted no.. 🤣

Tell us more about your 386 rocket 🤣

I find Wing Commander runs good on either a 25 or 33 MHz 386. 40 MHz is definitely too fast.

I was maybe a bit quick with that statement. After closer examination it runs like in your video. I didn't slow down the speed of the ship when trying to dogfight so it seemed crazy fast. It benches very similar to your setup (1 FPS slower in 3DBench).
