In VM (vmware) under windows XP guest (hence no openGL) via Terminal session (terminal to windows XP guest)

fullscreen=true
fullresolution=1600x768
windowresolution=1600x768
output=overlay

causes a crash. And that's the only option I have to have scaled display under VMware in DosBox. Opengl option gives blank screen, while directdraw gives no scaling (uh?).

Vmware supports OpenGL just fine. Install the Vmware additions.

If by terminal you mean RDP then D3D/OpenGL will not be functional on Windows XP while using RDP.

Why are you using DOSBox in Vmware?

You are running a emulator inside of another emulator and as such this isnt a supported configuration.

I just need scaling in directdrawor overlay to stop crashing.

And absense of OpenGL is feature of terminal access, not emulation. Don't show yourself new to windows, please.

Snark aside, if you are trying to run DOSBox (an emulator) in VMware (a virtual machine), you are basically doing exactly what DosFreak said.
