So far I've used autopatcher and the unofficial service pack 2.0a Dutch and both seemed to work fine for the short time I used them (autopatcher and the unofficial SP both on different machines, not on the same one for clarity)
I never tried the post 2.1 English SP though so I can't really comment on that.
I never downloaded the separate updates for 98SE (in either language) and I never bothered to as the unofficial service pack 2.x is supposed to contain all the relevant updates already.

I don't 😀

Not online and don't see a reason to patch it.

I think there are some notable bugs that have been patched since the CD rom but, i could be wrong becasue i don't know what install medium you are using or how late in the game my cd was made.

My cd rom is the one that doesn't require the floppy disk.

I use this unofficial service pack:

http://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/

It's still being maintained to date and works great! Have used it on 4 builds and counting now. Just make sure you install all your drivers and internet explorer 6 first before installing the service pack and install these generic usb drivers afterwards:

http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win9 … age-drivers.php

I've found that if I install everything in this order, it's quite stable and I am yet to experience any issues. Note though that when you install the unofficial service pack you will be presented with a large number of options. I only pick the core win98se updates (hotfixes), the windows me/2k theme pack, the uninstall java, the tweak ui and the date update. Don't bother with the performance tweak option as I've found that this option gave me bsod on 2 separate installs.

When I looked for the Dutch IE6 complete package, I had a very hard time finding it. In the end I found one on the security CDROM Microsoft made in 2003(?), but that disk is the Dutch version.

Any idea where I can find the English stand-alone version of IE6?

@Tetrium, I'm typing this on my mobile atm so I'm unable to check the download link but here's a site with the stand alone English version. Let me know how you go 😀

http://www.oldapps.com/internet_explorer.php? … net_explorer=11

@cdoublejj, the me/2k theme is totally optional as is all the other software this service pack has. If you don't want something, just uncheck it. I only checked the above things and that's all that was installed. No secret background added extras install. For the size of the download, I wouldn't stress about having to download all the other unwanted crap.

I always install the unofficial Service Pack 2.1a.
I might move to SP3 on faster machines and see what difference that really makes 😀

It's been a long time, but I thought that the unofficial SP 2.x for 98SE included generic USB mass storage drivers?

Cheers! Seems to be what I was looking for! 😀

@Tetrium, yes you're right. It does include usb mass storage drivers but these drivers don't appear to work with usb flash drives for some reason...well in my experience anyway. I always end up having to install the additional usb drivers instead in order for my several usb sticks to be recognised.

Hmm, I guess I'll have to simply try this out for myself. I can't remember if the 2.x patch worked with masss storage drivers or not.
I'm also interested to know if the 2.x patch will work with my USB ZIP drive without needing the additional mass storage driver.

Never worked well for me either.

I doubt i have the time now but, maybe sometime we can make a guide to installing and setting up 98. I'm sure i could learn a few things. i still have yet to get some stuff to work. Also i think i have found a way to get wifi regardless of drivers or encryption/security. (WEP vs WPA2)

@cdoublejj, yeah a guide to help others would be great. It's amazing how such simple things like installing windows can become a hassle if not done correctly. Not so much of an issue with windows xp onwards but 95/98 are damn picky on drivers.

So, what's your wifi idea? I'd personally love to be able to get N speed wifi working in windows 98 se.

My uncle has a dongle he plugs in his TV but ,the catch is that it isn't wifi it's ETHERNET! If I had to guess it simulates an Ethernet connection using a small SOC inside. you dial in to just like you do a wired router via a web page interface to set up. 😊 With device like that it should worth with any thing that has an Ethernet port.

There is other stuff i'd like to learn like how to get FF8 working on kernel ex or how to get certain dos games working on 98. Some dos games say something about not enough XMS memory and MDGX guy has a how to on web site on how to mod a 98 ini file so that those dos games that complain about no XMS ram run.
