Rummaging through an old spares box from my storeroom, I found these.

An Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor. 2.6ghz, 2mb of cache. Same silicon as the 6400+, this is like the ultimate in Athlon 64 technology. It hasn't seen the light of day since 2008 when I replaced it with a Phenom.

2 sticks of Kingston DDR2 667mhz ram. But not just any old green ram, these are Hynix FP-Y5 chips so they overclock beyond 1000mhz sometimes. Which is good for generic ram.

Sitting down a while, I was taken back to 2006-2007, when this rig replaced my s939 when it got struck by lightning and instead of just replacing the motherboard, I decided to upgrade to one a dem newfangled AM2s. Having a dual core back then made you special like. Also, good times playing Oblivion and The Witcher. Not so good times trying to play Crysis.

I'm sure that I have some other usable things from that period hiding around the house. I'll go look for them and see what else I can dig up for this build. It's good I came across these, cause I really need an XP rig for.... well nevermind, I just need another rig, OK.

Is it just me or do I notice a move away from 386/486 machines and seeing more and more projects with Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 chips 😀

It's amazing how powerful these machines, not too long ago, were and for how little money you can source them.

Today i dug around more in the store room after work to look for a heatsink which I remember putting away sometime ago. Here, the stock AMD heatpipe cooler built by AVC. It's actually a really good cooler foroverclocking AMD chips and I've used them before on Phenom II X4 at 3.6ghz and Athlon 64 X2s @ 3ghz. You really don't need anything fancier than this for sensible speeds.

and also an old copy of Win XP Home 32 bit.

Hmm, let me see, I now need just a Motherboard, HDD, Optical drive, Video Card, PSU and Case to finish this rig off. Actually, that's quite a few things I need.

So how's this build coming along? 😀

I also quite like those heatpipe stock coolers, they are great for cooling the more cool running chips 😀

Hi bro, the build has taken a bit of a back seat to my Athlon XP adventures this month. But I have a cae for it now, as well as an IDE DVD drive and a 500gb WD hard drive.

All I'm lacking now is a motherboard and video card.

I'm thinking 590SLi board and either a Radeon X1900 or Geforce 8800 series cards. Liked both back in the day, I'm planning for this to be something like my Athlon 64 rig c. 2006-2007, so any suggestion on parts from that era are most welcome.
