Yesterday, when I loaded up Cubic Player 1.7 (I've tried with version 1.6 as well) it simply refused to play anything.
It loads the module just fine but from there on nothing happens. Row and order doesn't progress and obviously no sound comes out. My sound cards are working just fine in all other software, so I don't think it's hardware related, but I just don't get why it's not working. Same regardless of format (.xm, .mod, .s3m and .it) and it's really annoying, cause I often listen to modules while doing other stuff.
Any suggestions ?

WinXP : PIII 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 73GB SCSI HDD, Matrox Parhelia, SB Audigy 2.
Win98se : K6-3+ 500MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB HDD, Matrox Millennium G400 MAX, Voodoo 2, SW1000XG.
DOS6.22 : Intel DX4, 64MB RAM, 1.6GB HDD, Diamond Stealth64 DRAM, GUS 1MB, SB16.

You did not mention on which sound card this happens, but to me this sounds like an IRQ or DMA issue.

If you haven't touched sound card settings, maybe settings of some other card has changed to so it now interferes sound card IRQ or DMA settings.

It happens on my GUS which I daily use in both FT2 and various different games with no issues. So I don't really get what's causing the problem.

I'm not sure about your specific problem, but a handy tip for most all versions of CP (you probably already know this though): The Cubic Player can really finicky about it's configuration "CP.INI" file.

I myself have found that even a simple edit to this file, with something that SEEMS to be a valid entry for your specific sound card (or another seemingly valid option for the program) many times will totally lock up CP, or simply crash back to the DOS prompt.

The times that I've screwed up my "CP.ini" file with even something simple that caused CP to crash or lock up, I simply reverted/restored that file to the default one that comes with CP... which would usually fix the problem.

Lastly, after successfully editing my "CP.INI" file (customizing it and having no lockups or crashes), I backup up the working edited version 'just in case' 😀

Like I said, I'm not sure about your specific problem (or if possibly you have edited your "CP.IN" file in a manner that CP doesn't like), but the above tips are handy nonetheless 😀

I've not edited CP.INI at all. One day it was happily playing modules, the next day, it loads them just fine, but doesn't actually play them.
Haven't figured it out yet. 🙁

*sigh* Booted my system up, renamed CP.INI to CP.OLD tried starting CP (just to see if it could generate a new CP.INI), but only got an error message. Renamed CP.OLD back to CP.INI, started CP and suddenly it works just fine again. I'll just allow this to remain a mystery. I don't care why it happened, as long as it's working again.

Totally weird! Hehe, I KNEW that CP was finicky about it's CP.INI file, but I didn't know that it was THAT finicky 🤣! Glad you got it working though... I myself LOVE the old CP 😀

P.S. Oh, and yeah... CP won't generate a new CP.INI file if the existing file is missing.

Lol, yes, I noticed. I'm not sure I was really expecting it to, just thought it was worth a go.

Hehe, it was worth a try... as many programs will do as such 😀

@All, BTW, here is a ZIP containing a full installation of Open Cubic Player v2.6 (Prerelease 6). It is preconfigured for use with DOSBox, and the ZIP also includes the required custom DOSBox configuration files, a custom DOSBox keymapper file for CP, a custom "CP.IN" configuration file for the Cubic Player (also included is the DEFAULT stock "CP.INI" file, "CP-INI.BAK"), as well as WinDoZe Start Menu shortcut files.

A few notes:

The custom DOSBox configuration files (as well as the Windows shortcuts) expect to find DOSBox and CP in the root of your C drive, located in the directories as contained in the directory structure of the ZIP. Needless to say, you can install this pack to different directories, but you'll need to edit the DOSBox configuration files and start menu shortcuts to point to the correct directories.

Note that the DOSBox keymapper file "Open Cubic Player Key Mapper.txt" has been slightly edited in order to prevent conflicts when using the keyboard shortcuts that the Open Cubic Player supports. Simply press the "SHIFT" key on your keyboard, in conjunction with the usual DOSBox keyboard shortcuts (refer to the included "Open Cubic Player Key Mapper Readme.txt" file).

The stock set of Gravis patches are also included, and CP has been configured to use them when playing MIDI files with it.

Lastly, FYI, the custom DOSBox configuration files and CP have been configured as follows (small snippets of these files below, the important stuff):

"Open Cubic Player.conf":

sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=5
dma=1
hdma=5
sbmixer=true
oplmode=none
oplemu=default
oplrate=44100

gus=false

pcspeaker=false
tandy=off
disney=false

xms=false
ems=false
umb=false

"CP.INI":

ultradir=C:\CUBIC\ULTRASND\MIDI
dos4gfix=off

playerdevices=devpSB devpNone devpDisk devpMPx
samplerdevices=devsSB devsNone
wavetabledevices=devwMixF devwmixQ devwMix devwNone
mixrate=44100
mix16bit=on
mixstereo=on
samprate=44100
samp16bit=on
sampstereo=on
midichan=64
amplify=200
panning=75
volume=100
balance=0
reverb=0
chorus=0
surround=off
filter=0

Anyhow, here's the ZIP -> http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/sno … rerelease_6.zip 😀

(EDIT) Basically, in a nutshell, semi-painless "don't have to edit anything" easy install and running instructions using the ZIP's DEFAULT directories:

UNZIP "Open_Cubic_Player_v2.6_Prerelease_6.zip" to the ROOT of your "C" drive in verbatim.

COPY your EXISTING DOSBox installation to the "C:\DOSBox" directory in verbatim.

COPY the included WinDoZe Start Menu shortcuts to the proper "Start Menu" directory on your hard drive in verbatim.

COPY your Tracker module collection to a new directory located in the the "C:\SBLive" directory on your hard drive.

Click the "Open Cubic Player" WinDoZe Start Menu shortcut, open Tracker modules and MIDI files from the DOSBox mounted "C" drive (*OR* your CD-ROM "D" drive), and ENJOY! 😀

I don't use DOSBox, nor the in my opinion "too modern" OpenCP. I'm sticking with classic dos-era CP1.7, but thanks anyway 😀

Man, CP v1.7... all of those good old memories! 😀 ESPECIALLY the larger "extended" text mode on my old Genoa 8500VL (Cirrus chipset) video card 😀

Just out of curiosity though, what don't you like about v2.6 Pre 6? It's been eons since I used CP17, but as far as I could remember CP26Pre6 looks and functions about the same.

It isn't era correct for my 486, and as far as I know, it doesn't do anything I need it to do that CP1.7 can't already do.

Understood! 😀 Hehe, I especially like and respect the part about the "era correct" 😀

LunarG, I just saw your post over in the "Must have software for DOS and Windows?" thread:
