Hey, I'm trying to format a 3.5" 1.44MB floppy as 320 or 360k, to use with my IBM 5150 (don't have any 5.25" floppies). When I attempt to do this, FORMAT throws an error: "Minimum size for this drive type is 720k"...

I'm 100% certain this is possible, as I already have one 1.44MB 3.5" floppy formatted as 320k right here. Now I need a second one, but can't remember how I did it.

Any ideas?

Some drives do not support older formats. I had the problem with my usb floppy drive.
The one I have, does not support 720 kilobyte, only 1.44 megabyte.
The only way I found out, was that I had a 720k disk, wich I wanted to format to see
if it had any bad sectors on it.

Yes, there are programs wich support formatting of other formats than just 1.44.
I have seen one, can't remember the name, that could format for mac using win.

EDIT:
Win-Image have support for different disk-sizes..... 😉

Figured it out already 😀 Turns out I had to configure it as 5.25" 360k drive in the BIOS to make it work.
I don't know how this works exactly but it doesn't make much sense to me: when configured as 1.44MB drive it will read and write 320k disks just fine... it just won't let me format them.

What kind of drive (internal or external) and what model?
My Usb floppy does not support 300K disks. 720/1.4 only

It's an ALPS drive with "external" motor, I think it came from an IBM PS/2.
Slightly off-topic, but this is the best floppy drive I've ever had, very silent and reliable. If you have a floppy that throws read errors on most other drives, this drive will usually still read it.
In fact, you can stop the motor by hand, and even spin it backwards, and it will keep on reading without missing a bit 😀

Found some info on floppy disk drives, in general. This might explain why you needed to set it as an 5.25 inch drive.
