Hi all before I give up on this drive and tell the person I purchased it from that it's kaputt is there anything I could be missing?

I recently purchased a Mitsumi 5.25" floppy diskette drive from someone on ebay, however I have put it into my Packard Bell platinum 55 and enabled the second floppy drive in bios but when I boot it says "Floppy Drive : B Failure". I can't see anything wrong with my hookups so is this thing dead? Do they usually just stop responding like this or can it be fixed?

Check the cable and make sure it isn't reversed.
Make sure the BIOS is set to 5 inch 1.2 MB
Make sure the drive power is connected

Does it do anything (make noise / light on?)

No I'm not getting any noise or anything, I just cleaned the pin connections and everything seems to be hooked up right.

What would cause it to be dead like it is getting no power? Also the engine to move the read write head up and down seems to get hot.

Hey I got it to recognize. It seems with these mitsumi drives that there are little jumpers and one of them was in the wrong spot for my setup.
Now I have a new problem though, the head won't move. Any ideas what could be causing that?

Never mind! I got it working perfectly now. Just had to play with the jumpers. 😁

I remember the first computer I ever built from scrap parts I got from a tag sale. I got everything working, fiddled with the parts inside, turned it on, and couldn't figure out why it couldn't find the floppy or hard drive (I forget which). I thought it was broken so I threw it out.

I later figured out that I'd probably reversed a cable. 😵

Aww that sucks. I've never had that happen thank goodness, but yeah it's usually dumb stuff keeping it from recognizing and the hardware in reality works fine. 🤣
