I'm sure I've not set up everything (sound for instance - not working at all.) But I'm more concerned about things that affect play. I found a walk thru for the Shannara game that mentions looking at books. I'd already checked a book on a table in game and when it opens it's blank. So is there something wrong with my dosbox set up? My game? Or am I just missing some clue to reveal the page? 😕
I'm only just starting up and sampling right now but I'd really like to get it working.

Oh, and I'm on a Mac.

If you illegally downloaded the game from somewhere, it is entirely possible that you have an incomplete copy that is missing data. You should try with a genuine retail copy.

Otherwise, many problems can be solved by closely following the 60 Seconds Guide.

I am not familiar with the game, but it sounds like it could be that the game was not properly installed. If what is supposed to be displayed on the page is stored in the game's resources as strings (text) and it cannot find it, it could display nothing but the blank page.

When a game is installed it often writes config files. These files may contain paths to resources that the game needs. It might point to a subdirectory in the installed folder or it might point to the CD since many CD games did not install the entire game to the hard drive. Also, If you do not mount the folders exactly the same to play as you did to install, resources will not be where that game expects. The fact that the sound does not work is also indicative that you did not properly install the game in DOSBox first.

Try Jorpho's suggestion of the 60 second guide.

actually I downloaded off an abandonware site specifically to test Dosbox. It's one of those cases where I'm willing to buy the stuff in order to play it but first wanted to make sure it worked on my Mac. Since so many old games are DOS and so many new are PC only I figured I'd give a test run to various emulators and see what worked and what didn't before committing money to buying games and finding out too late they didn't work! 😀 But I know it's not quite set up because most of the instructions I'm finding are for the PC not the Mac.

It's Dosbox .74

That is not a good way to test things. "Abandonware" is rarely pristine. It is almost always been modified in some way, hacked, ripped, cracked and even installers replaced with the pirate's own program. Often people have come here looking for help with a problem that no one else could replicate to solve the problem, only to find that it was a problem with the pirated copy that did not occur with a legitimate copy. I suggest looking for a legitimate, unaltered copy and trying again.
