So the Doom 3 timedemo thread made be dig out some of my newer cards and I have these 3 AGP 6600GT cards, all of which seem to have identical designs, I'm assuming they are all reference cards.

Only one works, the Leadtek which has received a replacement cooler (last image with the silver Zalman style cooler and the bridge on the back, green PCB).

The other two are a a MSI (red PCB) and Point of View (Green PCB with replaced caps which were bulging and cleaned cooler but no fan).

Visually I can't see anything that stands out.

What the two cards do is:

- no POST beep
- No keyboard activity
- Fan is spinning
- No image on the monitor

So I'm hoping someone on VOGONS has an idea or spots something.

I took images and uploaded them into an imgur album:

Check the GPU underneath the heatsinks.
I also got some 6600GTs brocken, because the GPU chip was cracked at the edges! Probably due to applying some force onto the cooler...

If everything seems in order, no busted caps, no signs of burned VRMs, no cracked GPU, you may always try the oven trick. 😉

The Leadtek card, I removed the cooler, cleaned the chips, cleaned the cooler, applied new paste and couldn't find any issues.

But one thing I will do tomorrow is try another motherboard. Just in case...

Quick update. Tried the cards in a Athlon XP board with VIA chipset. The MSI remains dead but the Leadtek with the replaced caps works in that board. Odd but I'm making some progress,

On the green card one of the big caps solder joints looks different (backside).

And I dont like the look of the yellow rather large golden resistor thingy mounted in an angle (frontside). On the MSI card the same thingy looks better with readable text and less of a burnt look.

The MSI card seems to have a bad solder joint at the large black square 1R0 thingy (front side), or it could be the picture.

Checked that 1R0 component, it's looks fine. The Point of View card now works in the Athlon XP motherboard. So maybe there is some sort of compatibility with the P4 board not sure.

I might replace the caps on the MSI as well. One thing I always wondered: The silver caps, they are a different type. What are they? Or what do I need to look out for when shopping for a replacement.

They all seem to be 330u 16V. The POV was odd, having 1000u and one 1500u. I had 1000u Panasonic caps lying around so I used those.

EDIT: Found it: http://au.element14.com/panasonic/16svp330m/c … -smd/dp/2354687

Now in terms of soldering one of these, so you just solder the pads first, then place the cap ontop and then heat up the sides?
