Ever since i started getting interested into retro computing my real goal has always been playing Unreal tournament on an Voodoo 5 graphics card.
Pretty much i thought i would never achieve this, but one day i found an Voodoo 5 5500 on an flea market for 1$.

Since than i have thought of assembling an kick ass computer with AGP 4x slot. From couple of failed dual 462 boards, to dual 370 , slot 1 boards.
But now i am thinking of making it all happen with an Asus TUV4X.

Is the following configuration satisfactory for some UT99 and HL via Voodoo 5?

Asus TUV4X , Pentium III 1.4GHz 512kB L2 , 512MB SDR 133MHz

I am still deciding on sound card, probably gonna be an SB Live.

Also, how well does V5 handle OC? I will replace the coolers (the original ones were missing, so i did some upgrade that sounds like an airplane 🤣 )
I am thinking of buying two copper coolers like the one on earlier VGA cards.

512 x 384 640 x 480 800 x 600 1024 x 768 1280 x 1024 1600 x 1200
V5 5500 81.46 81.01 79.35 77.61 68.53 53.05

Personally I wouldn't overclock the V5. But you will need to install the OC tool to enable the v-sync options, which also enabled the clock slider. Driver sand OC tool here: http://www.philscomputerlab.com/3dfx-graphics … -and-tools.html

I found the image of the V4 and V5 extremely shifted to one side. At 1600 x 1200 even when playing with the positional settings of the monitor I wasn't able to center it. The V3 3500 cards I have on the other hand have a perfectly centred image.

I use an LCD monitor with automatic adjustment, it even adjusts DOS screen with out problem.
60FPS is required for flawless gameplay, right? Meaning 68.53FPS @ 1280x1024 is pretty great.

I dont mind little lag here and there, but i hate crappy choppy movement constantly.

Give 1600 x 1200 a try. The image is extremely to one side and I wasn't able to centre it using either Auto or manual. The other resolutions weren't as bad but the V3 3500 is perfect in that regard.

That's a pretty kickass system for UT. If you're going to OC the Voodoo 5, I wouldn't go over 183 to be honest. You may be able to hit 190, but I wouldn't do it personally.

Stojke you might find these interesting. While they are from Unreal, the results from Unreal Tournament are slightly higher:

System:

- Slot 1 AOpen AX6BC
- Pentium III 1.1 GHz
- 256 MB PC133 SDRAM CL2
- Windows 98SE
- DirectX 9

Are the scores for V4 and V5 in 16 or 32 bit color depth?

Do you have a Banshee by chance?

Hi Elianda!

They are all done in 16 bit. In-game there doesn't seem to be an option to change to 32. There is a box, but it's set to 16 bit with no other option.

I don't have a banshee.

Whoa, I forgot that Unreal existed aside from Tournament 😀
Thanks for the graph, this definitely answers my question! For starters i have an Celeron Tualatin 1300MHz (100MHz FSB).

I'm surprised how well Voodoo 2 SLI mode works with this game.
What Voodoo 2 were you using? And what 2D adapter along side it?

What you are probably not seeing in these numbers is Voodoo2 (and SLI) stuttering occasionally because of its 8MB texture memory (12MB card). Voodoo1 is quite noticeably impacted if you run High world detail. Unreal will overrun the texture memory on Voodoo1 and 2 as well. Voodoo Banshee/3/4/5 are much more flexible in this respect with their unified memory.

Quake 2 is also a problem for Voodoo1. Pure3D 6MB Voodoos were sought after for it.

The Voodoo cards are from STB. 2D card I used, can't remember to be honest. I think it was a PCI S3 Trio64 V+ because Windows has the drivers for this card built-in.

Good point! Perhaps showing minimum framerates could help in this regard!

Interesting. So you would have to lower the detail?

To be honest I haven't played with detail settings, everything is set to whatever the default is.

In the timedemo I certainly haven't noticed any skipping but also didn't actively look for it. Good to know though!

From my benches the 8 MB Skywell Magic 3D Plus (Voodoo1 with 4 + 4MB)is about 20% faster in Unreal Timedemo.

Were the settings equal in those tests? In Unreal the Velocity matches V2, but in UT its speed is where I would expect it to be with both TMUs.

Yes! All settings are the defaults and untouched going from card to card.

Another difference is how the V2 cards scale in SLI. Much better scaling in Unreal compared to UT.

Unreal got support for the second Voodoo2 TMU in patch 218.

I guess the UT timedemo has a lot higher polygon counts.
