I wanted to run a BBS on a (hopefully Centos 6/7) server, but I'm not quite sure what kind of BBS software to use. I'm not quite old enough to really feel nostalgic about a BBS, but I still feel it'd be really cool to set one up...

I was thinking of using mysticBBS, does anyone have any suggestions?

Wildcat was probably the most popular. You can still find boxed copies on ebay once in a while, but be prepared to pay.

Since you're not hardcore into reviving something specific (as I did for example here http://ots.site50.net/ bringing back online my own old bbs)
I believe you'd better look at software that supports natively a telnet server. This will save you the trouble of dealing with a FOSSIL driver as a proxy. If I remember correctly, Mystic BBS that you' re considering does this, has a linux version and its development is still active so I'd say it's a good choice.
