For a while I've been wanting to replace my monitor with something that does 1080p, BUT, I've also been wanting something that has some of the same inputs a TV would have, so that I can kill two birds with one stone, and use the same screen for my PC as well as my consoles. The specs I'm looking at would be something like:

- 20-22" (anything bigger would defeat the purpose)
- Connections for HDMI, component, and VGA, as well as possibly DVI and S-video
- True 1080p resolution or greater (none of this fake 1080p compatible but really in between 1080p and 720p bullcrap)
- Decent scaling of 4:3 sources

Does anything like this even exist? 😜 Would I be better off getting a plain 1080p monitor with a separate converter for component?

I used to have this LG 22" 1080p:
http://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-M227WDP-tv-monitor

It was great. I used it for Amiga 1200 over SCART connection. What annoyed me was 16:9 ratio so replaced it with an older model LG M228 16:10 that I still use for all my retro needs 😉

They both have 4:3 scaling but with 16:10 ratio you get a bit more height.

Visit my AmiBay items for sale (updated: 2025-03-14). I also take requests 😉

Right now, I'm trying to decide between this: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/insignia- … 95079120d22en02

and this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/used/918932/sam … _1080p_led.html

What should I go with? I have a $25 gift card for Best Buy, so I'm tempted to go with the Insignia, but Samsung seems like a better brand.

Is 24" too big? IF not, find a HP LP2475w, does everything you need. Its 1920x1200 16:10 aspect ratio, but scales 4:3 sources correctly. Has 2 DVI-I ports (both takes DVI or VGA input), Displayport, HDMI, component, composite, and S-Video along with a built in USB 2.0 hub. Another option is the Samsung Syncmaster 242MP, this one even has SCART RGB input for 15.75khz outputting machines.

The HP sounds great, my only question is, how well does it scale 16:9 content? Most consoles don't support 16:10, and for playing FPSs I'd like to be able to use 16:9 resolutions as it actually gives you a better FOV. Not really sure about the latter monitor, because pretty much nothing uses SCART here.

I know Samsung made/makes a range of displays that offered what you want - I've seen a few of them in person, and as with most Samsung displays, they look nice. Vizio offers televisions in the 20-24" size range that will offer roughly what you want. Something like this guy: http://www.vizio.com/tvs/eseries/e241ib1.html

If used/old doesn't bother you - Dell used to include CVBS/S-Video support on a lot of their older UltraSharp monitors, which were generally good performers as well.

As far as 16:9 "giving you better FOV" - not always. That's only true if the game is Hor+; Vert- games will actually have a larger viewport on 16:10 (and yes, even today there are still Vert- games).

It shows black bars on the top and bottom, otherwise 1:1 pixel mapping. The SCART input on the Samsungs is mostly for older game consoles and computers that output 15.75khz RGB video.

I've had the same old Sanyo LCD (although 720p I'm sure there are 1080 models). It has 2 component, one composite, VGA, 2 hdmi, and s video. it also has stereo output for a Home theater. I don't know if they have it in stores anymore (bought it in 2009) but I am sure if you look in Craigslist or classifieds and even in the recycling plants you can find a good one. I found a good older HD flat panel in the trash, and it works and I gave it to my friend. I also used my Tandy 1000 on my sanyo and it looks OK.
