I've been trying to get WinQuake to work on my P100 machine for a couple days now, however every time I set the resolution to 640x480 or even 512x384 it crashes. Its seems to run fine in 640x480 windowed, but not full-screen. I tried forcing it through config.cfg and autoexec.cfg but the game seems to ignore everything and just goes to the default 320x200.

Running it on W95, a P100, 32MB RAM, 2MB Mach64 VT2 and a Voodoo which isn't being used since its software (GlQuake runs fine in 640x480 though).

Any idea on how I could force that res or what might be causing the crashes?

I bet it's the Mach64 drivers... I had the same issue once with a PCI ATi card ( 3D Rage? - don't remember) + Voodoo2 -> Quake 2 worked fine in Glide, but would crash at certain resolutions in software. I installed another set of drivers for the ATi card, installed DX6.1 and the issue went away.

You can list the modes detected (more modes than the VIdeo Modes section shows) with this command

vid_describemodes

(note the S at the end, there is already a vid_describemode which returns your current mode.)

and then you can set the mode with vid_mode and the corresponding number

Another switch to try is -dibonly which doesn't use DirectDraw (and is significantly faster/stable on more modern hardware like Geforces etc, because nvidia doesn't play well with MGL's buffer/palette stuff)

Well the drivers I used were for the mach64 VT(1) chip, for a dell OEM machine, might have to try something else. Would this be the correct driver?

EDIT: nope. The specific card is 264vt2 and I cant find it on vogonsdrivers. Googling only brings up dead links and a bunch of shady websites asking me to download their "driver installer".

Installed it, same stuff. I'm too tired to keep wrestling this card. Or maybe its W95, never had this problem with 98SE. I would just put another card in, but this is the only non-voodoo PCI card that have. Guess its time to find a new one.

Edit: also looking through the various benchmarks in vintage3d it seems that this card fails to launch almost every game that gets thrown at it.
