Computer info & diagnostics
Motherboard: Lenovo
Processor: Intel Pentium 2.00 GHz
RAM: 4.00 RAM of unknown type
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics unknown RAM
Audio: Conexant SmartAudio HD & Intel Display Audio
Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium
Game: Gene Wars by Bullfrog (1996)
Description of problem: Game plays well but I cannot get the sound to work.
Sound setting: SoundBlaster16 (default DOSBox settings)
Video mode: OpenGL/fullscreen
Version of emulator: DOSBox 0.74
Steps already attempted to solve the problem: Can't find the README file so I am in the dark. I've tried googling it but I keep getting how to install. It runs just fine and the sound files all seem to be there but I don't know how to get them to play. I tried SETSOUND in the sound folder but still nothing. Set sound to soundblaster 16 the next seting to 7 (all default DOSBox settings) and theres a third setting labeled 0-3 for the MIDI or something like that. not sure what that does. Sound not working even during tests but I've heard shreds of sound effects getting through during cutscenes. Been unable to repeat results... I am a total noob at DOSBox so I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

Have you been able to get sound with other games?

Also, if this is a copy of the game you downloaded from somewhere, it is a distinct possibility that the copy is incomplete and does not have any sounds.

Yeah all my other games I got to work except Lion also has no sound but I've been unable to find a version with sound. As for Gene wars, is there a way to get it with sounds or does it just not have music at all. Some of the effects work but its been hit and miss. Do you need a list of whats in the sound folder to determine the problem? there apears to be two sound folders one labeled "Sound" the other labeled "Speech". I dunno maybe just one. Lots of MDI files I've noticed no clue what those are...

Well, if you had your own authentic copy of the game with original disks, there would be no question. Maybe you should ask the people who run the site where you downloaded this game from.

Even if there aren't any files missing, there could just as easily be some other problem with an illegal copy of a game.
