I just thought of this cool idea to reuse an old AT Gateway 2000 P5-100 server case for a modern day server with SATA hdds and everything. I know that sounds super crazy but since there are no more AT motherboards I thought to find a baby at ISA/PCI backplane and find the fastest possible Single board motherboard to plug into a PCI/ISA slot. I'm looking for one with 100% solid caps on the board. I'm having a hard time finding modern ones, but the best I've found so far is an ISA board with an Atom D525 cpu and SATA ports. But it has only the leak prone electrolytic caps. I've also never built a backplane PC, so will the single board pc be able to access the other add-in cards in the system? Can I have multiple single boards in the same backplane working side by side? (just think of the power) And also, if I were to use an old backplane that has ISA slots with the PCI slots, will add-in ISA cards cause problems with newer single board systems? I can't wait to get this ultimate retro server started! 😀

I imagine you know you'll need to check the chipset supports dma if you want sound in dos games.

Plenty of s478/s370/ss7/s775 boards on ebay uk.
