So I found one of these Targus remote pointing devices the other day.

Seems like a rather nifty gadget – except, of course, I only have the pointer and not the USB transmitter. I'm thinking it's quite likely that each of these widgets has its own proprietary wireless protocol, and given that the transmitter looks like a very undistinguished tiny piece of plastic, the odds are practically nil that I'll find something suitable. And that's assuming that each pointer and transmitter isn't paired in firmware at the factory.

Am I missing something? Is the picture not as bleak as it seems? I've obtained replacement transmitters for an old wireless Microsoft mouse and keyboard, but those are huge things and they seem to pair up quite indiscriminately.
