Hi, my first post.

I have 10-12 old DOS games from the 90's which don't run under Windows any longer but fine under D-fend Reloaded.

Now I am not familiar with the GPL and I don't want to do anything wrong but my idea is to create a download with D-Fend reloaded pre-installed ready to run the 10-12 games. Is this allowed under the GPL license?

If you do this for your own pleasure nothing can stop you.
If you offer this package for download then foremost the copyright of the games needs to be thought of. If you don't care about that why csre about the license of dfend reloaded or dosbox?

My programs are already freely available for download. I am understanding from your words I can pack them together with D-Fend reloaded and offer it for download and by doing so I am not breaking the GPL?

Whether you can find sources to download a game or not does not mean that they can be legally distributed. And the way that you keep ignoring DOSBox's license suggests that you do not realize that D-Fend reloaded is merely a frontend for DOSBox and that you do not need D-Fend reloaded to run these games. So you have multiple licenses and IP rights to consider.

Rebel, when you say "my programs", are you referring to (a) programs *you* made, or (b) just programs that you want to bundle but are not made by you?
If a, please continue if you own the full copyright. But be aware of what Colllector wrote, D-Fend is just a front end for Dosbox and DOSBox is under the GPL. If you offer a GPL'ed software you need to offer the full source as well - see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html.

if b, then stop. Just that something is a free download does not mean you can offer it yourself. Look up Ultima 4, for example.

Dominus, yes those are my own programs (link), thus (a). I just want to offer them pre-installed in one download with D-Fend and DosBox ready to use with one mouse-click without the hassle for folks how to download and install things.

Another question would be how to give credit in an appropriate way to the developers of D-Fend and DosBox, I mean it's fantastic stuff.

Cool (sorry that we were so hard on you but we get (b) from time to time and this forum really really doesn't want to be associated with software piracy, regardless of personal views of abandonware).

As I wrote, I have no idea under what license dfend is, but once that is clear, it's just that you need to offer the sources as well and a big thank you note and link to the homepage of DOSBox is the best way to give credit.

I'd ditch dfend, btw, with proper configs you don't need it at all and probably makes bundling with DOSBox easier.

Agree with the idea of using just DOSBox. A frontend is nice for those that just want to add games to a collection, but are not familiar with how to setup DOSBox. If you are going to distribute something preconfigured there is no reason to include any frontend. It is easy create a Windows shortcut to start a game in DOSBox. If you do not want to script something to write a shortcut you can include the games and DOSBox in subfolders and use relative paths in a batch file to start the games in DOSBox. You could then just zip the folder containing all of the subfolders for distribution.
