I have a 386 Baby Screamer Series 42 motherboard that seems to have the turbo stuck off. The usual keyboard controls (Control alt +/-, etc), the turbo jumper, and the BIOS options don't do anything to change it.
Short story, I was wondering if anybody has a software utility to set the turbo state on this motherboard. Long story follows.
I think the turbo is off mainly because all the memory benchmarks are very slow (old post here: Re: Post your 386 Speedsys results here). The manual says that the non-turbo option runs the clock at 8 mhz, but i think it might not be accurate. Maybe it inserts memory wait states to approximate 8 mhz performance.
I'm afraid that the turbo stuff may be handled through the 8042 keyboard controller - afraid because I had to replace it to get the board to boot. I found a replacement on ebay which says "KB-BIOS VER F.. MEGATRENDS.. P8042AHP"" just like the old one. But it may not be exactly what this board needs. The 8042s are typically custom masked, and I don't think they can be programmed at all, only sent commands, so if I have to have the exact version for this board, I may be out of luck. (There are some non-matching numbers on the back - don't know what they mean.)
I've been digging through technical information that suggests that the 8042 may control turbo on its pin #29. If this is true, I may be able to mod the hardware and pull the pin high or low and force turbo on, but I am hesitant to do so. Its also possible that the 8042 can be commanded in some way to control the pin, but that is going to take a while to figure out. Maybe there's a utility out there already.
Thanks!
