I have a problem with system shock portable edition from systemshock.org (which they say they have permission to distribute so idk but i think it's ok to ask for help).
this is my (ignored for a week) topic asking for help on their forum:
https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=7900.0

So the normal version, uses a inpackage dosbox with a custom bat file to enable or disable features, but (ofc) it's not portable to linux due to various windowisms (i'm on linux) on the bat file. Trying to force the issue by loading it on linux dosbox went so far as to make sure the patches were not applied when starting the game (for example the mouse look patch didn't work).

So i downloaded the 'SSP-mobile(android) ' version which is just the game with exe patches pre-applied. Now it works... except. My keyboard keypad will not register as movement keys ingame, even though it is usable in the main menu to select options (i tried with numlock on and off). Also tried to edit XCYB.CFG manually, but got nowhere useful. Except a being a bit perplexed about how can i make cdshock use different profiles since that file has multiple ones.

Oh, so they don't have permission for it? I thought it was some situation like the sierra krondor release, never mind then.

You forgot to read their "Looking Glass Classics" disclaimer at that forum:

The Looking Glass Classics °LGC are games created by the companies Looking Glass Studios and the closely related Origin Systems from 1991-1997. Looking Glass Studios (previously "Looking Glass Technologies") folded in 2000 and their publisher Origin was disbanded in 2004. We distribute these games here free of charge, but we do not claim to hold any rights to them. To the best of our knowledge they have been long discontinued by their publishers and are not being sold anymore. If you know otherwise or if you own relevant copyrights, please contact the forum's Administrator and the respective downloads will be removed.

IE it's typical "abandonware", they have no special permission. Ergo we are obligated not to support it.

It's a bit brazen, i skimmed the disclaimer and got the idea that looking glass way back when gave them permission - is system shock 1 one of those games that has conflicting rights holders?

Someone made a 'guide' for SS2 on Steam once that led to System Shock portable.

Later on, that got that someone permabanned from Steam.. Action on a DMCA probably if it's that harsh, and the rights are held somewhere

'Abandonware' is a fucking myth.
