Right now I have a Riva TNT and Voodoo 2 SLI in my Pentium Pro rig, which you know, isn't very period-correct.
Now, I am looking for a card which would work with the majority of mid-90's games which is period correct for a Pentium Pro.
I am looking for a card which has great DOS support and runs fast for mid-90's games such as Duke Nukem 3D and Blood and Quake.
And what Voodoo 1 card should I get for this rig?

Some people are talking about S3 chips and other are talking about Matrox cards. Wich.... Well, don't know for my self.
(Have not had any to test my self yet. Benchmark's will talk on my behalf)
For the V1, then get a Orchid Righteous 3D, and if it can not be found. Then I think that just about any V1 would do.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

I would like multiple people to comment on getting a certain S3 card or a Matrox card. I also couldn't find that V1.

probibly two best period DOS choices

1)S3 = best compatibility

2)matrox millinium = better picture, faster but less game compatibility (though I hear its not that bad)

go for a V1 if your doing the period correct thing.

Is a Voodoo Diamond Monster 3D 4MB + Cable worth 80 USD + 20 USD shipping? Also I don't mind picture quality as long as lines aren't going through the screen. But I would prefer it to be fast.

It is the only one on EBay at the moment, and this one comes with a passthrough cable.

Some here on Vogons have found that low quality S3's, tend to have too bright a picture for their taste.
Opinions differ though as well as personal preferences.

Then wait and have patience my friend. Look locally. At some point a cheap one will find it's way to you.
P-Pro is a 1994/95 CPU. And V1 is from 1997.
Most games are not really Voodoo ready as standard from that narrow period.
Though patches was later created for some games. Just not all.
Getting the right 2D card is more important.

I mean, isn't the Pro better than the 200 MMX in most/some cases? Now, what is the best Matrox Millennium :p

Actually don't know. All I know is that P-Pro is different.
Someone else, might help you better on this question.

No DOS compatibility thread is complete without a link to the DOS compatibility matrix. S3 is king for compatibility, but Trident isn't far behind, though they are probably slower.

clock for clock a pentium pro is slower than a pentium in dos 16-bit. clock for clock a pentium pro is faster than a pentium in 32-bit. They kicked ass in GLQuake for instance. They were built from the ground up to run windows nt hence the 32-bit performance for high end workstations and servers of the time. you can almost be guranteed that the GLQuake server you were playing on back in the day (if it were a good one) was powered by a pentium pro.

Gateway 2000 Case and 200-Watt PSU
Intel SE440BX-2 Motherboard
Intel Pentium III 450 CPU
Micron 384MB SDRAM (3x128)
Compaq Voodoo3 3500 TV Graphics Card
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card
Western Digital 7200-RPM, 8MB-Cache, 160GB Hard Drive
Windows 98 SE

I know it is slower than the Pentium in 16-bit. But it is still pretty damn fast.

Especially much faster than needed for any 16-bit DOS game. Doom already uses 32-bit protected mode, as does DN3D.
I suppose that is also true for Windows games. Wasn't there a thread about the most demanding Windows 3.x games?

The whole thing wasn't an issue for gamers at the time, only for office/professional/productivity use. Windows 95 itself might run a bit more snappy on a PMMX than on a PPro at the same clock, but not much.
Of course you have to consider that PPro was much more expensive than Pentium 1/MMX so even the same 16-bit performance was a disappointment.

Consider ATI Mach64 as an alternative. I had one back in the day, it was OK.

What about a Nvidia Riva 128. Released in 1997, it's compatibility & image quality seems to be good.

I am acutally looking for just a 2D card at the moment. I rather it not have a 3D chip.
