Are these compatible between each other?
I know there are a few models - ODIN, DALLAS, SYMPHONY, etc.

Can I use for example DALLAS where ODIN was? OR Symphony?

Yes, as far as I know they are all more or less the same with identical pinouts.

I know I use a Dallas RTC on a board that came with a HoustonTech RTC (with an allegedly incompatible VIA chip) without issues. Just try not to get a C-series RTC and put it in a BIOS that already has a Y2k workaround.

How do I identify an C series RTC? Does it have an marking C?
The boards I want to replace had an ODIN RTC 887A

Modding the old ODIN RTC is easy if you want to save a little money.

I used sandpaper to wet grind down to the battery, it took perhaps 10-15 minuts. This way the mod will not look as messy as the Dremel mod but you need to remove the RTC package from the board.
I have not had time to finish the mod yet but the only thing left is to solder and glue a $1 CR2032 battery holder on top of the RTC package. I had to heat the RTC in the oven for a while at 75C to get it going again as water somehow got into the package.

Also beware when buying these from eBay. I got a Chinese fellow sending me RTC chips with dead batteries. There's really no way of knowing how old the stock is and I doubt they actually check if the battery is dead or not.

I think only Dallas chips have the C series. It is basically a Dallas chip with century bit auto-rollover.

I seem to recall some issues where pins that are NC on some, end up connecting to something they shouldn't, where unused pins were connected to 5V on the socket

Ah, I already trashed them 😀
I know that you can crack them open and do an rtc pimp mod, but I guessed it would be much easier to get an socket instead and get some batteries. Plus some one already made replaceable RTC battery packs I remember.

I want to test the boards where I removed the battery and inserted an socket with an Symphony RTC because that's the only one I have that is socketed and works. The model of it is SL1287.
