I read an explanation of how to use the advanced controls in the underdogs but when I try it on various games now i cannot get the shortcut to pop up, or at least I cannot see the VDM Sounds controls from the properties of a PIF file I see. I am running Win 2000, is the advanced menu indicated in this help only available in XP? The aim is to try and boost EMS memory for games, is this possible using VDM?

VDMSound/LaunchPad replaces .pif's, do NOT try to right-click on a .pif and expect to see anything VDMS-related.

So the frontloader program allows u to do advanced stuff while the vdm program is just basic. I had no idea. Probably still don't. In any event, switching on more EMS and disabling DPMI solved my problem for the game I was working on (Tie Fighter) and two others (aces) that i haven't played properly in about five years. I am officially a VDM convert.
