I've tried using memtest86 but it seems to crash when I have double sided sticks in.

What programs do you use?

That is what I was using. They have all the 2.00 versions archived on their homepage.

I always have had success with MemTest86+ version 4.00 for 486's. Version 4.20 does not work well on any of my 486's.

It is possible that you rmotherboard does not function completely well with the memory you are using. Which motherboard are you using and what are the model numbers on the memory IC chips?

This is what I used to use before discovering Memtest86+, it's a memory diagnostic tool made by Microsoft. I have attached a bootable disk image, you can use WinImage or similar to write it to a floppy. I have tested it and verified that it works on my Toshiba Satellite T2100 with a 486DX2-50. ̶H̶e̶l̶l̶,̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶e̶v̶e̶n̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶k̶s̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶s̶m̶a̶-̶s̶c̶r̶e̶e̶n̶ ̶T̶o̶s̶h̶i̶b̶a̶ ̶T̶5̶2̶0̶0̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶a̶ ̶3̶8̶6̶D̶X̶-̶2̶0̶!̶ (Edit: No it doesn't, it crashes after a couple minutes 😵) I do not know if it'll work on a 486SX, as I do not have a working 486SX system to try it on.

Note: you need at least 8MB installed for Windows Memory Diagnostic to work, because it's actually built on a version of the Windows NT kernel.

The attachment Windows Memory Diagnostic.zip is no longer available
