I am currently running a dual-boot system with WinME and WinXP and was trying to install and run "Meatpuppet." However I can't get it to run under etiher O/S regardless of toying with various compatibility settings. The documentation for the game indicates that it is supposed to run under Windows95, but I don't have Win95 anymore and didn't want to have to set up a Win95 install jsut for one game. (I don't have the exact error message handy right now (I will post it later today) but I recall it having something to do with "music capp" or soemthing to that effect. The game installs fine but when you run it it goes to a black screen and then I get the erro message.

I am currently running a P4 3.2 with a Radeon 9800 Pro, 1GB ram and Sound Blaster Audigy2.

I have also tried to get it up and running on a windows 98 machine (P3 450) but the results were identical.

If anyone has any thoughts, comments or suggestions, I would appreciate them.

P.S. I just stumbled across these forums and think they are a great resource! 😁

I have the same problem running in XP. It installs ok, but I get the following error when running in Win 95 or 98 compatibility:

[Music.cpp:57]: Error! Please insert the Meat Puppet CD.

It doesn't matter which of my two drives the game is in. In the other compatibility modes, I get:

[File.cpp:150]: ERROR! cannot open env\splash1.env.cmp in
Y:\meat.dat for reading

Is there a patch available? Just wondering.

I found a sound fix patch (attached) and I get to the title screen, but then I get an abnormal program termination (ala Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library) and a different error message:

[Music.cpp:329]: ERROR! Cannot carry out the specified command on
an auto-opened device. Wait until the device is closed, and then
try again.

Same thing in safe mode...any ideas??

Thanks for the patch! I will give it a try tonight and see how far I get. I had given up on this one.

I'll post my results. I would only get as far as a black screen after install and I would see the in game mouse cursor.

Talk about a delayed reply.... I tried the patch in Win XP and was able to get to the title screen, but then got another error and it crashed to the desktop. I am also going to give it a try in Win 98 and see if I get any farther.

Strangely, I did not get the same erro message as you after the patch. It was a differnt cpp: error
