So I want to have my Windows 98 install at least somewhat modern. I'm not expecting to get YouTube working or anything but I just wanna know what unofficial upgrades I should do to get modern browsing working? Or just updates I should do to prevent people abusing security holes in Windows 98 on my system to hack my network when playing game online. Any help or advice would be appreciated... thanks!

If you dont want people abusing security holes in windows 98, i wont recommend to use it for browsing on the internet.. That would just be stupid to do.. I really have more trust in windows vista when doing that..
When using windows xp on the internet, i can recommend do the following thing.. Try to get the most updates as you can, dont use the administrator account when you want to go only. Install a good virusscanner. And look for trusted software to remove spyware, dont using adobe flash and flashplayer.. Also would encrypt the data on your storage..

~ At least it can do black and white~

1) NAT firewall (ie any common router), with only the necessary ports forwarded to the PC. You'll probably want the ports listed for DirectPlay 7 or whatever DirectX version you're running.
2) restrict scripts from running in the web browser except on known/trusted sites. I use NoScript, but some may find it annoying.
3) If you download something, think about who you're downloading from, and scan it somewhere before you run it.

There is an unofficial service pack 3 you can get at Major Geeks (and other places, but make sure the site you download from doesn't add a bunch of adware to the download)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/unoff … rvice_pack.html

List of fixes is here
http://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/

I installed it to get USB connectivity working, not internet.
I don't think it changes Internet, though it does include some security fixes.

It looks like Seamonkey still supports Windows 98 and even Windows 95.
Version 2.33.1 came out in March 2015.

That was too good to be true 😢

It says 1.1.18 is the last version supporting Win9x. That one came out in 2009.

Earlier in 2015 I played hundreds of hours of CivNet online with my Pentium 233MMX: never got an infection. A regular firewall should suffice. Windows 98 is now so old I doubt it is actively targeted anymore.

Don't forget to up the Universal usb mass store driver update http://reboot.pro/topic/2411-universal-win98- … storage-driver/ as well. I've got it running Win98 gold.

I'm typing this in Windows 98 with a 200MHz Pentium right now. To get things all up to date, look at Wikipedia and mdgx.com, plenty of information to get you going. Thing that sucks is that Microsoft's installer for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 does not work anymore, so IE6 is the highest you can go. There are some other updates I could install that require service pack 1 to be installed... but oh well I guess.

Security is an issue if you are using this computer for all of your browsing, but I'm sure you have something more modern for all of your sensitive information. Even if you don't, you could always run Linux and use w3m for browsing.
