Hi all ! Few years ago bought a machine, I was long looking for - the IBM AT 5170/6mhz. Here is it in my blog - http://iakov-khalip-jr.livejournal.com/75602.html

It has an MFM controller and MFM HHDs - original double-height 20mbs, and also I added ST-251-1, in which 30 are visible... Also I tried to replace them by common IDE IO card and an IDE HDD - but the system always writes error "HDD FAILURE" - even when I try the Ontrack DIsk MAnager 7... Theoretically it's a common AT machine - so it must work - or it's incompatible with IDE drives ?

I guess you'll need:
- Disable MFM controller.
- Use an IDE BIOS.

Your AT has not a BIOS that supports IDE hard disk, so connecting a normal (without its own BIOS) IDE controller won't work. Maybe if you connect a ethernet card with a suitable BIOS (i.e.: from the XTIDE project), your IDE hard disk will be detected.

Also, remember to update your CMOS settings. If your computer believes that it has a MFM disk, it will throw you an error every time it boots.

Local computer huru told me something like that in a chat - that the 5170 wont work without IDE card, which don't have it's own BIOS... So I'm going to buy a SCSI 16 card and try it... Thank you for the answer...)
