I've been lurking through Computer Shopper 01/1993, and there's a 'Help us find these children' page. There were photos of four missing children.

I checked out their names, hoping that at least someone was found alive. But I found that one girl is believed to be slain (police caught the murderer and he should already be released from his 20 years sentence), yet her body was never found. Others fate remains unknown.

Is it common for the US, that children abducted are never found? Did the situation improve since the beginning of '90s?

Interesting choice of subject matter bristlehog.

According to the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (2013) a child goes missing in the USA every 40 seconds. Over the last 20 years approximately 4.4 million people have dropped off the face of the earth and never been recovered and I'm thinking they are only the ones who had someone who cared enough to report them missing.

Here's some really interesting but disturbing facts from credible sources. Even if its a couple of years old.

and here's the Australian Federal Police's missing persons profile pages.

Usually they end up dead but the possibility of them being kidnapped and shipped out of the country as slaves comes up once in a while. That could account for why so many of them are never found. The US is also a big country with a lot of undeveloped land left where bodies could be hidden and never found. It's not like in a smaller country where there's only so many places where someone could dump a corpse so they get found right away because the police usually have a pretty good idea where to search before the ink is even dry on the missing person report.

Keep in mind that while some of these are nefarious, the majority are simply runaways or custody disputes of estranged parents.

The children taken by strangers or slight acquaintances represent only one-hundredth of 1 percent of all missing children.
