I've been playing around with the 8259A somewhat, mainly to get it into auto-EOI mode in a reliable way.
You won't believe what happened next.

Turns out I had opened up a whole can of worms, because of different PC models, different 8259A chips, various clone chipsets and all that.

I only had time to skim it but interesting article. A lot of work to save a couple of instructions!
Also agree with your observation about vintage PC literature being much more in depth.
