Has anyone else noticed that the DOS prompt background colour, which is normally jet black, on their Trio3D is more of a greyish-black? Is there any way to fix this? Why do some graphics cards have this problem? Do I need a VGA BIOS upgrade? My EONTRONICS Trio3D contains a sticker which says it is BIOS VER: 2.0B.10. Thanks guys!

There is an entire topic about old S3 cards with excessive brightness issues. I had one like that (a Virge DX) and solved it by flashing another VGA BIOS

I tried the BIOSes on that site you listed, but the display is still greyish black.

Your best bet is to find someone with a card using the same chip without that weird default gamma and ask them to dump the firmware.

If Feipoa is willing to post a pic of his card, I could have a look in my stash and check if I have anything which might have a compatible VGA-BIOS chip thingy

edit: Don't seem to have a Trio3D, only have a single Trio3D/2X
