apt-get install timidity

Maybe not that command, but timidity and fluidsynth are two packages that provide software synth capability. Also, you will need some patches and / or soundfont (available in repositories).

listmidi doesn't work on linux.

midi itself does, if you configure the port correctly

I tried installing timidity, dont have a soundfont though

aren't midi players like MEGAMID supposed to be able to use the FM synth in the soundblaster?

is there a way to tell dosbox to fallback to using the internal soundblaster emulation if no external MIDI device is present?
