There is too little info to diagnose anything... The splash screen freezing means that anything that loads before the GUI does froze, and Win9x loads a LOT of stuff then. Corrupted system files, corrupted drivers, hardware conflicts, registry corruption... No way to guess really.

Did anything specific trigger this behaviour? Like installing new hardware, installing an specific program or driver, etc.

Sounds like Win98 is working like normal 😉

Press F8 before the logo appears and select bootlog.txt, then let the machine load and lockup.
Reset and press F8, enter safe mode and open c:\bootlog.txt in notepad.
The last or near to last entry should list what was loaded before the machine locked up.

The machine is just being weird, very weird, it sometime hangs for no reason, and all the software i install on it are windows 98 only.

So you're having intermittent lockups? Any other things you might have noticed which you described as 'weird'?
When it comes to computers, 'weird' can mean a 1000 things 😜

Anyway, if you want you could try memtest to see if any of your RAM modules is the cause of your problems, but with your description it could kinda be anything. CPU not getting too hot? I thought that if the CPU (and I mean the old ones that have little thermal protection) overheated, it would simply cause the screen to freeze and not give an error like the one you pictured above.

Intermittent could also be caused by the PSU btw. Or caps.

AFAIK you can't really mount 72-pin SIMMs or any kind of DIMMs the wrong way - they will have notches and other physical barriers to prevent such.

I can see it happening with SIMMs though, especially if the socket is a bit damaged (good possibility with hardware this old).
If you're unsure (talking more at the original poster here), check where pin 1 is.

If that happens to me, by the time you wrote the post for this thread, I've already re-installed Windows 98 🤣

I made myself an answer file installation, so on a fast machine it's installed in under 10 minutes. But I also swap parts around until I figure out what is causing the issue.

Weird Windows 98 issues are often related to memory and storage issues.

Would you want to share the answer file with me? I actually will be needing one for 98SE within a few months or so, perhaps some weeks, and I only got one for ME 😊

I can do that, but even better, here is a guide that shows you how to create your own!

http://www.philscomputerlab.com/unattended-installation.html

Because you can customise what programs you want, the user name, the licence key. The only interaction that is needed is after the first reboot, accepting the licence terms. Everything else you can walk away and let it do it's thing.

Thanks, I'll remember this one. I have made one for 98SE before but can't remember where I kept all the files. I'd actually need to rebuild my backup rig just so I have all my files and programs (ISOs and patches for example) in 1 easy spot 😀

It's basically a file you can use when installing Windows 98, 98SE and ME (dunno if it'll work for 95) and it will automate installation.

The thing is this: Suppose I were to install Windows 98SE 20 times. I'd have to clock my country and timezone 20 times...why? It's not I'll likely emigrate while in the middle of it. So I automate it, I'd suggest you read a bit here http://users.telenet.be/mydotcom/howto/script … werfile_w98.htm so you can inform yourself a bit (there's surely many more and perhaps better sites but this will give you a head start 😉)
